Motor Controls Engineer

Mainstream Engineering•Rockledge, FL

About The Position

Mainstream Engineering Corporation is seeking a Motor Controls Engineer to lead simulation, software design, prototyping, and validation for next-generation motor control systems. The role involves developing advanced motor control software for thermal systems, combining knowledge of motor control, power electronics, embedded firmware, and model-based design with practical experience developing and testing control algorithms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science, with a minimum GPA of 3.3.
  • At least 3 years of experience simulating motor and/or power electronics controls and developing embedded software.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++.
  • Fundamental understanding of electric machine types, including PMSM, BLDC, and IM, and commutation strategies, including FOC, DTC, SVPWM, and six-step.
  • Understanding of MCUs, switching devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC, and GaN, gate drivers, current and voltage sensing, and ADC synchronization.
  • Proficiency in software debugging and use of standard hardware debugging tools, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and dynamometers.
  • U.S. citizenship required due to U.S. Government ITAR program restrictions.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree.
  • Familiarity with thermal/HVAC systems.
  • Experience developing and following DO-178 documentation and processes.
  • Experience with TI C2000 or STM32 microcontroller families.
  • Experience with additional programming languages such as C#, Python, or assembly, and GUI design.
  • Understanding of hardware components, hardware and PCB debugging, sensors and actuators, and common communication protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize high-fidelity three-phase inverter and electric motor models in PLECS or MATLAB/Simulink to validate motor controls, electrical parameters, device behavior, and thermal performance.
  • Evaluate and select commutation topologies, including FOC, DTC, SVPWM, and six-step, for motors and systems.
  • Implement multivariable control loops for speed, torque, and position tracking, and verify safe operation of electric machines and components in simulation.
  • Develop sensorless and/or sensored control algorithms, state estimators, and observers to track rotor position and velocity.
  • Translate simulated controls into embedded C/C++ software and validate the software.
  • Develop software requirements and maintain bidirectional traceability among system requirements, code, and test cases.
  • Maintain version control and configuration management baselines in alignment with appropriate standards.
  • Design and execute functional and/or automated testing to demonstrate compliance with software requirements.
  • Assist with hardware bring-up, hardware/software debugging, analysis of steady-state and transient test results, and dynamometer testing.
  • Work with electric machine designers to support optimized motor parameters.
  • Partner with hardware and power electronics engineers to design, test, and optimize motor drive hardware and thermal performance.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate core motor control algorithms into the main embedded software framework.
