About The Position

American United Federal Credit Union is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Mortgage Underwriter to join our lending team. Our mission is "We Help When Others Won't." That means looking beyond the numbers to understand each borrower's complete financial picture while making responsible lending decisions that protect both our members and the Credit Union. In this hybrid role, you will review and underwrite mortgage applications, maintain compliant and accurate loan files, and collaborate with borrowers, loan officers, management, and third-party vendors to move loans efficiently from application through closing.

  • Ability to maintain compliant and accurate loan files
  • Ability to collaborate with borrowers, loan officers, management, and third-party vendors
  • Ability to move loans efficiently from application through closing
  • Ability to analyze mortgage applications, credit histories, income, assets, debts, and other financial information to evaluate creditworthiness
  • Ability to make sound underwriting decisions in accordance with Credit Union guidelines, lending authority, and applicable regulations
  • Ability to review mortgage files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance before closing and funding
  • Ability to prepare and provide required disclosures and documentation to borrowers
  • Ability to maintain accurate loan records and document loan status throughout the process
  • Ability to communicate regularly with borrowers, loan officers, title companies, appraisers, notaries, and other partners
  • Ability to manage multiple loans and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to refer complex loans, exceptions, or requests outside assigned lending authority to management or the Consumer Loan Committee
  • Ability to work with the Audit Department to address findings and support compliance with federal and state mortgage-lending requirements
  • Ability to monitor regulatory and industry developments and complete required annual compliance training
  • Ability to review and help maintain mortgage procedures, checklists, and underwriting guidelines
  • Ability to provide timely, knowledgeable assistance to employees and other departments
  • Ability to consider each application fairly, including applications from borrowers with lower credit scores, limited income, fixed income, or previous denials from other financial institutions.
