About The Position

The Mortgage Underwriter III is responsible for underwriting residential mortgage loans to mitigate risk and meet all applicable Federal, State and NCUA regulations, as well as credit union, secondary market and investor guidelines, policies and procedures. This role primarily handles more complicated loans and requires a high degree of independence in problem solving and decision making. The underwriter ensures compliance with established Credit Union policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements, and maintains current knowledge of regulatory changes, external/internal compliance requirements, and investor/portfolio guidelines. They also communicate effectively with internal partners, provide training to teammates, and act as a subject matter expert for the underwriting process.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in mortgage underwriting required with a focus on FNMA, FHLMC, Jumbo, and Construction-to-Perm.
  • Minimum 3 years of mortgage or HELOC underwriting experience.
  • Technical/other training completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or equivalent financial service industry experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must have ability to think analytically, solve problems, work independently and as a Team.
  • Must have excellent time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree in a business-related field.
  • Working knowledge of Encompass.

Responsibilities

  • Performs credit decisions on loan requests for residential first mortgage loans including Jumbo, Portfolio, Construction-to-Permanent, HELOC, Denials, Withdrawals, and Condo Project Reviews, utilizing automated underwriting systems or manual underwriting guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with established Credit Union policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory changes, external/internal compliance requirements and investor/portfolio guidelines.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with all internal partners associated with the Mortgage process.
  • Provides training for Teammates, acts as subject matter expert for the underwriting process, and provides support in reviewing policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
