Morgue Attendant (2520) - San Francisco Department of Public Health - (EXEMPT)
About The Position
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is seeking a Morgue Attendant to perform duties under supervision, including transferring remains of deceased persons and surgical specimens, preparing bodies for post-mortem examinations, assisting with autopsy procedures, and preparing and releasing bodies to morticians. The role also involves maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the morgue and autopsy room, and performing related duties as required. This position involves considerable physical effort, manual dexterity, and exposure to disagreeable working conditions. Depending on department and operational needs, incumbents may be required to work weekends, sick days, holidays, and during vacation periods. The applicant pool may be used for future and current vacancies.
Requirements
- Possession of an associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent courses with concentration in Biological Sciences and Anatomy from an accredited college or university.
- Six (6) months of experience conducting autopsies or surgical grossing in a hospital or medical examiner setting.
- Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date.
- One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
Responsibilities
- Transfers remains of deceased persons and surgical specimens to the autopsy room.
- Prepares bodies for post-mortem examinations and assists with autopsy procedures.
- Prepares and releases bodies to morticians.
- Keeps the morgue and autopsy room and equipment in clean and orderly condition.
- Brings bodies of deceased persons from wards and patient rooms to the morgue and refrigerated compartments.
- Wraps bodies in sheets and places them in refrigerated compartments.
- Checks storage boxes for proper temperature, anatomical position, and proper identification of bodies.
- Prepares bodies for release to authorized parties after post-mortem examination by aspirating fluids and cleaning bodies according to facility procedures.
- Receives animal specimens, prepares them for examination, performs specimen dissection, and prepares tissue for testing at a reference laboratory.
- Cleans the autopsy room.
- Delivers soiled linen to laundry, returns clean linen to the morgue and storage room.
- Performs disposal of chemical and biological waste.
- Logs information of deceased patients into the hospital morgue database.
- Prepares deceased individuals for family viewing.
