About The Position

Wellstar is seeking a Monitor Technician to join their ICU team, working day shifts. The Monitor Technician plays a crucial role in patient care by observing cardiac monitors to detect arrhythmias and reporting changes to nursing staff. This role involves using equipment to track multiple patients simultaneously, maintaining and charging equipment, and potentially performing clerical duties such as data retrieval, chart preparation, and verifying telemetry orders. The position emphasizes excellent customer service, patient rights, confidentiality, and effective communication within the healthcare team.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor Upon Hire Required
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language

Nice To Haves

  • Staff members with monitor tech experience are required to provide proof of participation in a EKG monitoring course such as Learn Rhythm or a comparable course
  • EMT, Paramedic, CNA, or Monitor tech certification

Responsibilities

  • Observe cardiac monitors to ensure recognition of arrhythmias.
  • Watch patients' heart rates and/or pulse oximetry and report important changes to nursing staff.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and ensure batteries are charged and installed properly.
  • Perform clerical and receptionist functions.
  • Retrieve data and prepare and maintain patient charts.
  • Verify current telemetry orders in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Serve as the pivotal communication source to the clinical staff.
  • Protect patient rights and dignity.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Answer telephone and call lights promptly and notify appropriate individual of need for follow-up.
  • Resolve unit monitoring concerns.
  • Recognize cardiac arrhythmias and report promptly.
  • Record telemetry strips each shift and as changes or events are noted.
  • Ensure 12-hour strips are printed and distributed to the units per policy.
  • Accurately interpret rhythms and measure intervals, able to identify age-appropriate differences.
  • Accurately maintain required units' dispensation records and monitor logs.
  • Ensure appropriate assignment of patient to telemetry unit and documentation of all equipment.
  • Prepare each telemetry unit for patient use; clean each unit upon return.
  • Keep necessary telemetry supplies available and organized.
  • Report broken or defective equipment to Manager and Biomed immediately.
  • Support initiatives of the health care team.
  • Participate in unit performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support professional nursing practice through evidenced-based practice and ethical accountability.
  • Provide unit supplies, patient care supplies, and equipment as assigned.
  • Use effective written and oral communication skills with physicians and healthcare team.
  • Use safety communication techniques.
  • Communicate completion of assignment/duties.
  • Give concise report of all patients monitored and status of equipment to oncoming shift.
  • Communicate patient safety concerns/problems/emergencies to the RN.
  • Notify the appropriate nursing unit promptly of rhythm changes.
  • Communicate need for immediate response, if indicated.
  • Use positive and respectful communication with all members of the healthcare team, patients, and families.
  • Provide safe patient monitoring.
  • Follow all policies and procedures with regard to safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Clean all equipment properly utilizing appropriate cleaning process per isolation guidelines.
