About The Position

The Monitor Tech/Unit Secretary is a member of the health care team who assists in the coordination of total patient care, under the direction of a Charge Nurse. This position is the focal point of communication and flow of the nursing unit. Applies the VHS Values to the performance of every job duty. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Experience working as a unit clerk or administrative support role
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Basic Computer Skills required
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language
  • Ability to work as an effective team player and serve as a resource person to patients, staff and visitors
  • Knowledge of Quality Control, Safety and joint Commission standards
  • Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required

Responsibilities

  • Provides continuous cardiac monitoring as a trained observer at the nurse’s station.
  • Performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patient.
  • Maintains a safe/clean environment; reports/corrects hazardous conditions within scope of responsibility.
  • Check equipment each shift, including communications devices, and physical department rounding to proactively surveil the department for needed repairs, safety hazards, and appropriately communicates needs to proper departments.
  • Supports discharge planning functions and team rounding activities
  • Adheres to department and hospital Policies and Procedures
  • Receives, greets, and directs patients, visitors, and employees arriving at the unit, or calling the patient care unit.
  • Demonstrates excellent telephone etiquette when receiving, placing, or transferring calls.
  • Maintains composure and professionalism in emergency situations
  • Always maintains confidentiality of patients and patient information.
  • Answer patient call lights immediately and reports patient needs appropriately
  • Receives and distributes mail, flowers, and various other items for patients on the unit.
  • Maintains adequate quantity of forms, materials, supplies, and equipment on assigned units.
  • Orders supplies as necessary according to standards and ensures fiscal responsibility.
  • Maintains clean and organized work and storage areas.
  • Update patient flow and assignment board.
  • Maintains downtime forms and other necessary forms.
  • Maintains unit specific records, logs, and binders. Example: temperature logs, etc.
  • Monitors the fax machine for incoming communications.
  • Checks charts of all patients scheduled for surgery or special/diagnostic procedures and assures required information is complete e.g., labs, x-rays, H&P, pre-surgery forms.
  • Assists patients and care team with medical record requests.
  • Appropriately responds to all safety and emergency signals and notifications
  • Contributes to the team spirit and cohesiveness of the unit and nursing department.
  • Contributes to unit and department problem solving and issue resolution.
  • Maintains a professional attitude, demeanor and appearance, wears prescribed departmental uniform, wears identification name badge.
  • Completes a comprehensive shift report to oncoming staff before leaving unit.
  • Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C-I-CARE Standards of the Hospital.

  • Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $28.84 - $37.08 per hour
