About The Position

The Machine Operator is responsible for safety, quality, and attainment of production for their assigned group of machines during the shift. This role requires proactive support-seeking from the Process Technician or Shift Supervisor to ensure a successful shift. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining injection molding machines, molds, and stacking equipment, responding to machine alarms, performing basic troubleshooting, adhering to safety procedures like lockout/tagout, and ensuring machines run according to setup sheets. The role also involves cleaning production molds, stacking equipment, and the general work area, as well as performing basic maintenance on stackers and chutes. Documentation is a key part of the role, including recording machine parameters, mold run data, checklists, and data entry in the Mattec unit. Process responsibilities include performing color and resin changes efficiently, conducting line clearance for product changes, performing frontline quality checks, achieving shift attainment, and communicating quality issues. Adherence to plant safety and SQF standards, including the use of appropriate PPE, is mandatory. The operator will also participate in continuous improvement projects and initiatives like drool/purge reduction, and escalate process changes as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • At least six months of experience in an injection molding environment.
  • Fluent in English with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics preferred.
  • Injection molding machine operator experience.

  • Certificate from plastics training facilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and restart injection molding machines with pre-set parameters.
  • Shut down machines for scheduled downtime.
  • Manage operator to machine ratio as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Respond to machine alarms and escalate to Process Technician if troubleshooting is unsuccessful within 15 minutes.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of defective parts and adjust processes accordingly.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures for maintenance work on machines.
  • Ensure machines operate according to the master set-up sheet.
  • Perform basic swing chute operation.
  • Report any cycle deviations to the supervisor/process tech.
  • Clean production molds according to the cleaning schedule.
  • Clean stacking equipment as per the checklist.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of oil, parts, and dirt.
  • Perform basic stacker maintenance and assist in troubleshooting.
  • Clean swing chutes and companion chutes, and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Clean drool from machines every 3 hours or as needed.
  • Record running parameters and deviations on the set-up sheet.
  • Complete the mold run data sheet.
  • Complete the stacker/mold checklist upon completion of cleaning and inspection.
  • Perform data entry operations in the Mattec unit.
  • Complete metal contamination/PPMS/Mold cleaning sheets.
  • Complete outstanding training documents.
  • Record machine downtime on line inspection forms.
  • Perform color changes within 15-20 minutes using a liquid color unit.
  • Perform resin/material changes, including mixing for blended resins.
  • Perform line clearance during product changes.
  • Conduct frontline quality checks on parts as they are produced.
  • Achieve shift attainment and escalate issues impeding attainment.
  • Communicate quality issues and necessary information to the next operator.
  • Comply with plant safety and SQF standards, using appropriate PPE.
  • Identify and escalate product at risk to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects.
  • Identify and participate in drool/purge reduction initiatives.
  • Escalate process changes to the Process Technician.
