Under the general supervision of the physician, the MOHS Histotechnician prepares tissue specimens for optimal microscopic examination and analysis. This involves marking tissue samples for orientation, embedding and sectioning tissue, cutting fresh or paraffin-embedded skin on a cryotome or microtome, treating samples with chemicals, and staining slides from clinical and research sources and patients according to standardized department lab procedures. Staining may be performed manually or with an automated slide stainer. For Mohs micrographic surgery, the role maintains appropriate quality controls and records, ensuring the Mohs laboratory operates in accordance with OSHA and CLIA regulatory standards. The technician is also responsible for maintaining all laboratory equipment in good working order, monitoring, maintaining, and reordering related equipment and supplies. Up to 20% of time may be devoted to research project support and up to 20% may involve work as a Mohs histotechnician at the Baltimore VAMC under a cost-sharing arrangement.
