About The Position

This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The coach must adhere to the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, model nondiscriminatory practices, and assume complete responsibility for the conduct of their team. The role involves supervising the use of equipment, establishing positive relationships with stakeholders, and attending required meetings. The coach will also be responsible for preparing and submitting schedules, handling athlete injuries according to established procedures, and completing end-of-season reports. Compliance with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI, and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook is mandatory. The coach will make decisions regarding their team within established policies but will defer broader scope decisions to the Athletic Director. Key duties include assessing player skills, monitoring players during competition and practice, modeling sports-like behavior, and participating in special team activities. Additionally, the coach will perform support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms and emergency data cards, and attend staff development meetings and clinics to improve coaching performance.

Requirements

  • Some experience in organized basketball at the club, select, modified, junior varsity, varsity or college level preferred.
  • Effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Candidates must be employed by the Board of Education in accordance with Article XII-G of the Master Contract between the Buffalo Board of Education and the Buffalo Teacher’s Federation.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED and/or Life Guarding (when applicable) certifications at the time their application is submitted.
  • If holding a valid certificate to teach physical education, must first meet the first aid/CPR requirement prior to coaching.
  • Other Certified Teachers and Non-Teacher Coaches must complete one of the two pathways within the specified time frame: New York State Coaching Certification program offered by Erie 1 BOCES or NFHS NYS Specific Second Pathway Process.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques.

  • Assuming complete responsibility for the conduct of their team.
  • Supervising the use, issuance, return, cleaning, inventory, and storage of equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
  • Submitting equipment and supply requests to the Athletic Director.
  • Establishing positive relationships with coaches, athletes, parents, and community members.
  • Attending meetings called by the Athletic Director or Building Principal.
  • Attending league, section, and coaches’ association meetings when required.
  • Conducting an organization meeting with athletes to explain try-outs, selection methods, cutting procedures, and code of conduct.
  • Preparing and submitting a schedule of scrimmages and non-league contests to the Athletic Director.
  • Following established procedures for athlete injuries.
  • Submitting initial and final rosters to the Athletic Director and updating as necessary.
  • Reporting scores to news media when required.
  • Notifying the Athletic Director and Building staff of any canceled games, scrimmages, or practices and any unusual events or incidents.
  • Supervising team members after practices/games until all have left the locker room or building.
  • Completing end of season reports.
  • Complying with all policies and procedures outlined in the NYS Commissioners regulations, NYSPHSAA Section VI and BPS Interscholastic Athletic Handbook.
  • Making decisions regarding their particular team, in keeping with established policies and procedures.
  • Assessing player’s skills, monitoring players during competition and practice.
  • Modeling sports-like behavior and maintaining appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Participating in special activities such as parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Performing support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Attending staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performing any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director & Principal or other appropriate administrator.
