About The Position

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is seeking a proficient and customer-focused professional for the Modification of Child Support Orders Program. This role is crucial in supporting the department's vision of building Strong Families, South Dakota's Foundation and Our Future. The primary duties involve reviewing Petitions for Modification for accuracy and completeness, verifying required documentation, assessing court orders for compliance with laws and regulations, data entry, processing legal documents such as Notice of Hearings and Referee Reports, filing documents with the Clerks of Court, and responding to customer inquiries regarding the modification process.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of computers and a variety of programs including Microsoft Office Suite software (Outlook, Word, and Teams) as well as specialized programs and databases used within the Department.
  • Skills to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up with minimal direction.
  • Skills to obtain and provide information by phone and email in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Skills to exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy, and tact when interacting with others.
  • Ability to work in collaborative team environments.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills, often handling multiple projects at one time with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and to communicate effectively and timely.

  • Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
  • All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of child support principals, concepts, and case management practices (preferred but not required).
  • Ability to interpret court orders and other legal documents (preferred but not required).

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing Petitions for Modification to ensure they are completed accurately and required documentation attached.
  • Reviewing court orders to determine if the order is in accordance with laws and regulations.
  • Entering information into a database.
  • Processing Notice of Hearings, Referee Reports, and court orders.
  • Filing proofs of service and other documents with the Clerks of Court.
  • Responding to inquiries from customers who have questions regarding the modification process or need assistance with completing the Petition for Modification.
