Modeling & Simulation Intern (Materials)

MATSYSSterling, VA
Hybrid

About The Position

The Modeling & Simulation Intern will support the development and analysis of computational models that predict the behavior and performance of advanced materials under realistic conditions. Working under the guidance of senior engineers and scientists, this intern will be responsible for integrating raw material data generated at MATSYS into packages that be used within the applicable software and defining boundary conditions for model parameters. By virtue of contract requirements, this position is only open to U.S. persons.

Requirements

  • The ability to be on-site 2-3 days per week
  • Experience with applicable modeling & simulation software (COMSOL Multiphysics, NASA CBAero)
  • Current student or recent graduate from a degreed program in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Aerospace) or closely related field
  • Demonstrated technical report writing
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and refinement of computational models to simulate material behavior
  • Set up and run finite element analysis (FEA) or related simulations following established workflows and best practices
  • Support material model parameterization and calibration by fitting simulation inputs (e.g., constitutive parameters) to experimental data
  • Post-processing of simulation results to extract relevant metrics and generate clear plots, summaries, and comparison tables
  • Correlate simulation predictions with laboratory and field test data to help validate models and identify gaps or improvement opportunities in existing material models
  • Prepare concise technical slides and written reports to communicate modeling approach, key assumptions, results, and recommendations to engineers, scientists, and project stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned
