Modeling and Simulation Engineer

Hyundai Motor Company•Ypsilanti Charter Township, MI

About The Position

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking a Modeling and Simulation Engineer for the Vehicle Control Virtual Development Team within the Vehicle Control Software Department. The department develops features to enhance the dynamics, controllability, and efficiency of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles for the North American market. The engineer will use advanced simulation modeling to develop, validate, and optimize control algorithms across automotive domains including powertrain control, chassis dynamics, off-road performance, and towing. The role combines virtual engineering with real-world validation to help ensure control concepts perform effectively across diverse driving scenarios. The position also supports battery electric vehicle drivability, including technology and method development, responses to North American headquarters inquiries, technical project reporting, and—when needed—in-vehicle testing at North American proving grounds or off-road facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, robotics, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience developing and deploying simulation models across powertrain, chassis dynamics, and thermal management systems.
  • Strong expertise in MATLAB/Simulink and Stateflow for control algorithm and model development.
  • Demonstrated experience with co-simulation methodologies for validating multi-domain system interactions.
  • Fundamental understanding of electric vehicle systems, hybrid and conventional powertrains, and extended-range electric vehicles.
  • Fundamental understanding of vehicle dynamics, including longitudinal, lateral, and vertical motion analysis.
  • Knowledge of off-road and towing dynamics, including trailer behavior, load distribution, and stability control in towing scenarios.
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet; tools such as Vector CANalyzer and CANape; and general vehicle network architecture.
  • Ability to explain technical topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong time management, self-management, organization, written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; employment eligibility will be verified at hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in automotive engineering, computer engineering, control systems engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 10 years of experience in simulation model development for powertrain and vehicle dynamics applications, and in control algorithm development and testing.
  • Solid foundational knowledge of powertrain control strategies for conventional, hybrid electric, and fully electric vehicle platforms.
  • Knowledge of vehicle efficiency optimization, including energy management, regenerative braking systems, and thermal management.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain 1D simulation models for control algorithm performance across vehicle, powertrain, thermal, and chassis systems using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and GT-Suite.
  • Design and deploy virtual development frameworks for developing, testing, optimizing, and validating control algorithm concepts using simulation tools such as IPG CarMaker and AVSimulation SCANeR.
  • Collaborate on hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system architecture and operation to integrate and validate embedded control systems through real-time simulation hardware.
  • Develop and execute HIL test cases covering normal operating conditions, edge cases, fault scenarios, and performance boundaries.
  • Support the transition of algorithms from simulation to rapid-prototyping or embedded control hardware for in-vehicle integration.
  • Support in-vehicle testing and tuning of control algorithms, including validation at North American proving grounds or off-road testing facilities when needed.
  • Identify and develop technologies, strategies, and methods to improve the drivability of current and future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis battery electric vehicles.
  • Support North American headquarters with electric vehicle drivability inquiries and issues.
  • Create and present technical reports on the status of related projects.

Benefits

  • Zero-dollar employee premiums on medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and family.
  • 100% employer-paid disability and life insurance.
  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and abundant holidays.
  • Competitive salaries.
  • A global environment that fosters diversity.
  • Retirement savings and planning benefits.
  • Vehicle fuel allowance.
  • Vehicle lease allowance.
  • Access to health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts.
  • Flexible work hours.
