About The Position

This is a Hybrid Model Based Design Engineer position focused on Electric Motors within the Tools and Outdoor team, requiring onsite work in Towson, MD three days a week. The role involves creating, developing, simulating, and testing robust electric motor models using model-based engineering tools like MATLAB/Simulink and Twin Builder. The engineer will also be responsible for modifying electromagnetic designs based on early learnings, establishing best practices for electrical system modeling, generating part libraries, mentoring other engineers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive technological advancements. Additionally, the role includes documenting control strategies, simulation results, and supporting certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in electromagnetic and thermal design of motors, with ability in model-based design.
  • Proven experience with 2D and 3D finite element analysis tools for motor design.
  • Experience in modeling 3-phase inverters, including thermal aspects.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical system thermal modeling using lumped parameter circuits.
  • Ability in MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing environments.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD preferred
  • Experience with field-oriented control methods for brushless motor control (highly preferred).
  • Knowledge of modelling of Lithium-ion battery system is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Creating robust, well documented electric motor models using model-based engineering tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Twin Builder).
  • Developing and implementing calibration processes for electromagnetic and thermal models of electric motors.
  • Simulating and testing (verifying) these motor models to find issues in early design processes.
  • Modify electro-magnetic design of the motor based on early learning to correct the issues before physical prototyping.
  • Establishing and keeping workflows and best practices for electrical system modeling within the team.
  • Generate robust motor and electrical part library that can be used by System level modelling teams.
  • Mentoring and training engineers in model-based design and controls engineering.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and research institutions to drive technological advancements.
  • Documenting control strategies, simulation results, and validation processes specific to Electrical System.
  • Supporting certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment.
