Model Based Controls Engineer – Motors

Stanley Black & Decker, Inc.Maryland USA - Remote, MD
$90,000 - $144,900Remote

About The Position

As a Model Based Design Engineer – Electric Motors, you will be a key member of our internal Model Based Controls design team, responsible for creating robust, well documented electric motor models using model-based engineering tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Twin Builder). You will develop and implement calibration processes for electromagnetic and thermal models of electric motors, and simulate and test these motor models to find issues in early design processes. You will modify the electro-magnetic design of the motor based on early learning to correct issues before physical prototyping. Additionally, you will establish and maintain workflows and best practices for electrical system modeling within the team, generate a robust motor and electrical part library for System level modeling teams, and mentor and train engineers in model-based design and controls engineering. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and research institutions to drive technological advancements, documenting control strategies, simulation results, and validation processes specific to Electrical System, and supporting certification and regulatory compliance for global deployment are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (PhD preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in electromagnetic and thermal design of motors, with ability in model-based design.
  • Proven experience with 2D and 3D finite element analysis tools for motor design.
  • Experience in modeling 3-phase inverters, including thermal aspects.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical system thermal modeling using lumped parameter circuits.
  • Ability in MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with MIL, SIL, and HIL testing environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with field-oriented control methods for brushless motor control (highly preferred).
  • Knowledge of modelling of Lithium-ion battery system is a plus.
