Position Summary: Job Title: Mobile Shelter Safety & Security Associate Full Time/Part Time/PRN: PRN (as needed) Temporary/Seasonal/Regular: Temporary. Must be available to start immediately. Exempt/Non-exempt: Non-exempt Compensation: $25-$28/hour Benefits Summary: Not eligible for benefits, except where required by law. Travel/Location: Onsite, multiple mobile locations in the NYC area Mission of Role/Position Summary: The Safety Associate/Driver supports the safe, respectful, and orderly operation of Mobile Cooling Services during extreme heat events. This position is responsible for safely driving and parking a mobile cooling vehicle, transporting team members to service locations, assisting with route coordination and dispatch activities, monitoring safety conditions, de-escalating conflicts, escalating safety concerns when appropriate, and supporting supply management and logistics. The Safety Officer/Driver serves as a key member of the mobile response team, helping ensure that older adults, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations have safe access to cooling resources and services. This position is not law enforcement and does not provide armed security services. The role focuses on transportation safety, client and staff well-being, operational support, incident response, and coordination with leadership and emergency services when necessary.

Requirements

  • Must reside within reasonable daily commuting distance to work sites in the NYC/NJ local area.
  • Valid current passenger class driver’s license with a clean driving record, with at least one year experience operating vans, buses, or other passenger vehicles.
  • Proof of insurance to meet minimum requirements for driving in NY.
  • Basic proficiency with mobile phones, GPS navigation systems, and communication devices.
  • 1+ year experience with de-escalation, conflict resolution, or customer service.
  • Willing and able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts as needed.
  • 1+ year of experience in safety, security, transportation, customer service, or related field.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsored visa is required. We are not able to employ those located outside of the US.
  • Must pass company and any applicable client background check and reference check upon offer of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ year experience serving older adults, individuals with disabilities, or other vulnerable populations.
  • 1+ year experience in safety monitoring, transportation services, emergency management, disaster response, community outreach, or social services.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
  • 1+ year experience driving and parking in urban environments.
  • Training in: De-escalation or crisis intervention (e.g., CPI, Mental Health First Aid), Trauma-informed care, First Aid / CPR (or ability to obtain), Emergency Preparedness or Incident Management Training

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a mini-van, passenger van, SUV, or other assigned vehicle transporting staff, equipment, and supplies throughout designated service areas.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and document findings according to established procedures.
  • Ensure vehicle cleanliness, operational readiness, and compliance with all applicable traffic laws and organizational policies.
  • Safely navigate urban, suburban, and residential environments while maintaining awareness of road, weather, and traffic conditions.
  • Identify safe parking locations and ensure proper vehicle positioning during service delivery.
  • Assist team leadership with route planning, navigation, dispatch communications, and schedule adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate mileage, fuel, vehicle inspection, and transportation records.
  • Conduct routine walkthroughs of the vehicle interior and immediate exterior area during assigned shifts.
  • Identify and promptly report safety concerns, hazards, or suspicious activity to operational leadership.
  • Ensure aisles, exits, and emergency equipment remain clear and accessible at all times.
  • Utilize trauma-informed communication and verbal de-escalation techniques to address conflicts or disruptive behavior.
  • Intervene early to prevent escalation while maintaining personal safety and respecting participant dignity and autonomy.
  • Reinforce Mobile Cooling Services guidelines related to safety, capacity, accessibility, and appropriate conduct.
  • Provide courteous, professional assistance to older adults, individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and community members.
  • Request supervisory support or emergency assistance when situations exceed the scope of the position or capacity of the mobile response team.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to medical, behavioral, or safety emergencies within the mobile environment.
  • Contact emergency services (EMS, fire, police) when required and in accordance with established protocols.
  • Assist with vehicle-specific emergency procedures, including evacuation or relocation of the vehicle.
  • Complete incident reports accurately and promptly following any safety or emergency event.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to maintain the safety and integrity of the mobile warming shelter operation.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and securing supplies, equipment, water, cooling resources, and program materials.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs to leadership.
  • Support daily setup and breakdown activities.
  • Assist with dispatch communications and coordination between field teams and supervisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the safe and effective operation of Mobile Cooling Services.
