About The Position

This position is for a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) on a PRN (as needed) basis at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford, KY. The role involves performing quality laboratory testing, monitoring equipment and systems for analytical performance, and ensuring corrective actions are taken before patient test results are reported. The MLT will also provide direction and orientation for non-certified staff and testing personnel, ensuring adherence to laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, and quality control. The role requires identifying and correcting problems affecting test results, documenting all activities, and maintaining compliance with Ohio County Healthcare policies, procedures, and regulatory issues, including HIPAA. Strong communication skills and professional conduct are essential, as the MLT will interact with physicians, other hospital departments, and co-workers, and will keep management informed of important departmental matters. The position also involves supervising laboratory students and potentially performing management duties in the absence of a Manager/Supervisor.

Requirements

  • BLS Certification or obtains within six months of hire.
  • Associates degree

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality laboratory testing by monitoring testing equipment and systems for acceptable analytical performance.
  • Provides direction for non-certified staff performing waived testing.
  • Ensures corrective actions are taken prior to patient test results being reported.
  • Provides orientation of testing personnel responsible for specimen processing, test performance, reporting of test result and for instrument maintenance and calibration of test systems at defined intervals.
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, processing, and testing.
  • Performs proficiency testing specimens as assigned.
  • Adheres to laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural when test systems are not within the lab’s acceptable level of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test results and either corrects them immediately or notifies the lab manager.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab’s established performance specifications.
  • Assures that services are provided in a manner consistent with Ohio County Healthcare policies and procedures and the Purpose, Vision, and Values.
  • May be requested to be a member of the QI team.
  • Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.
  • Performs all procedures according to established policies and procedures of OCH and adheres to legal compliance policies as well as other regulatory issues.
  • Keeps Laboratory Manager or Supervisor informed on matters of importance to the well-being of the Laboratory Department (safety, morale, work methods, equipment, procedures, staffing, transfers, etc.).
  • Attends 75% of department staff meetings throughout the year and initials and dates staff meeting minutes.
  • Attends 100% of mandatory meetings unless approved by Manager/Supervisor in advance.
  • Attends 100% mandatory hospital and department in-services and is responsible for obtaining information covered if not in attendance.
  • Regularly reviews posted memos, notes, and in-services and signs forms promptly.
  • Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA, always protecting patient privacy.
  • Establishes a good rapport with physicians, physician offices, other hospital departments and has a good working relationship with laboratory co-workers.
  • Informs director of actual or anticipated problems to include staffing, performance, or patient related concerns.
  • Listens attentively and requests clarification and/or feedback as indicated.
  • Supervises laboratory students.
  • Performs supervising and other reasonable management duties in absence of Manager/supervisor, if requested.
  • Communicates any competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and takes the initiative to obtain additional surgery training, on days off if necessary, as needed per individual technologist, to adequately perform job duties.
  • Exhibits positive human relations skills of cooperation, dependability, courtesy, tactfulness, enthusiasm, and overall good attitude.
  • Keeps the number of personal calls to a minimum and short.
