About The Position

Tennessee Oncology, a prominent community-based cancer care specialist and a leader in clinical trials, is seeking a talented and motivated Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Pathology Level I. This entry-level position in the HMS Pathology laboratory is responsible for processing various patient specimens for immunological, histological, molecular, FISH, and clinical chemistry testing. The role involves adhering to safety guidelines for handling biological and hazardous materials, maintaining accurate records, managing inventory, and ensuring quality control. The ideal candidate will be proficient in all aspects of laboratory processing and contribute to the meaningful work of supporting community oncologists and their patients.

Requirements

  • Current State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) License required.
  • Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification and licensure.
  • At least two years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
  • Ability to make independent decisions, process information accurately, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and be organized.
  • Ability to accurately pipette and maintain sterile conditions as required.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance as defined by the manufacturer on equipment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially with Excel and Word spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of laboratory testing procedures and practice.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrates understanding of proper quality control procedures, use of control materials, and documentation of QC results and corrective actions.

Nice To Haves

  • Flow cytometry experience preferred.
  • Protein electrophoresis experience preferred.
  • Molecular experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Processing of various patient specimens for immunological testing, including bone marrow/peripheral blood, fluids, and tissues for leukemia/lymphoma.
  • Performing fluid-based immunological tests such as SPEP, UPEP, s-IFE, u-IFE, serum free light chains, and/or immunoglobulins.
  • Conducting histological, molecular, and/or FISH processing.
  • Performing clinical chemistry testing, including diagnostic clinical tests and immunoassays.
  • Following proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Properly recording lab testing, quality control, and assurance.
  • Maintaining appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.
  • Completing all aspects of immunological testing, including sample preparation, staining, acquisition, quality control assessment, and maintenance of reagents and equipment.
  • Assisting with administrative duties such as completing proficiency testing and quality control checks.
  • Preparing reagent stock and working solutions.
  • Monitoring proper use and consumption of reagents, materials, and consumables.
  • Adhering to laboratory procedures and processes.
  • Maintaining equipment and processes to aid diagnosis and treat diseases.
  • Maintaining proper records of laboratory testing and results as described in the policy and procedure manual.
  • Adhering to all state and federal compliance requirements.
  • Performing quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of clinical/pathology data.
  • Maintaining required inventory of laboratory supplies for operations in areas of work assignment.
  • Proficiently using the LIS for ordering tests, rejecting tests, reviewing, and approving results.
  • Performing other related duties as needed and assigned by supervisor/manager.
