About The Position

Nebraska Methodist Health System is hiring a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist for its laboratory at Methodist Fremont Health Hospital in Fremont, Nebraska. The position conducts diagnostic laboratory tests used to detect, analyze, and treat a wide range of diseases and medical conditions.

The role performs and reports laboratory analyses on patient specimens, maintains quality control, calibration, and routine maintenance records, and supports quality goals and patient safety. The technician also helps train staff, document competencies, participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance, and prepare for accreditation inspections. The schedule is three 12-hour shifts per week, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with weekend and holiday coverage requirements.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) science.
• Completion of a NAACLS-accredited MLT program; alternatively, completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and service in the Medical Laboratory Specialist (Lab Technician) enlisted occupational specialty; or prior qualification as a technician under 493.1491 on or before February 28, 1992.
• Current Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent is required within six months of hire. Failure to obtain certification within six months results in demotion to a non-certified technician position.
• Knowledge of medications and treatments used in patient care.
• Critical-thinking skills for determining alternative solutions or solving problems.
• Strong verbal communication skills for positive interaction with staff and customers.
• Ability to operate a computer, including a mouse and keyboard; follow written and verbal instructions; work in a diverse environment and as part of a team; maintain patient confidentiality; and read, write, and comprehend reports and other documents.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force.

Nice To Haves

• One year of experience in an applicable section of a clinical laboratory is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform technician duties and accurately perform, evaluate the appropriateness of, and report requested tests and analyses on patient specimens.
• Use time efficiently to complete assignments and assist coworkers.
• Complete and document quality control, calibration, and routine maintenance 100% of the time.
• Achieve laboratory section and organizational quality goals and follow PPE guidelines.
• Identify problems and promptly follow up with the Supervisor, Laboratory Director, or Medical Director(s) to ensure accurate and timely laboratory services.
• Respond professionally to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
• Document orientation, training, and education, and complete organizational and department competencies.
• Read and understand new procedures and major procedure revisions.
• Assist with training new and existing staff, including reviewing and completing orientation and skill or training checklists.
• Assist with inspections, proficiency testing, quality assurance activities, record maintenance, and preparation or updating of section policies and procedures for accrediting agencies.
• Complete and submit assigned proficiency testing by the deadline.
• Assist with CAP checklist responses for inspections, review and revision of procedure manuals, proficiency-test problem resolution and follow-up reports, and quality control and quality assurance activities.
