Mission Systems Lead, Omen

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA
•$253,000 - $336,000•Onsite

About The Position

Anduril is seeking a Mission Systems Lead for the Omen team at its Costa Mesa headquarters. Omen is a hover-to-cruise autonomous air vehicle designed to provide the endurance, payload, and mission flexibility of larger aircraft in a runway-independent Group 3 platform. The position supports development of a new aircraft in a lean, high-ownership environment, with rapid design and flight-test cycles. The Mission Systems Lead will guide a technical team developing and integrating Omen’s Mission Systems from concept through delivery. The scope includes mission perception, mission autonomy, and payload systems. The role works with program leadership, other Anduril product teams, and third-party vendors to build integrated systems based on customer requirements and traceable program-office technical decisions. It combines technical leadership, team building, objective setting, and delivery of design, analysis, and test activities. The role owns customer success and the technical roadmap for Omen Mission Systems, while leading the team responsible for delivering operational systems. It includes architecture and integration work across autonomous mission software, payload interfaces, perception and navigation capabilities, and supporting compute, storage, and network design. Travel for test events, vendor collaboration, end-user engagements, or co-location with other teams may be required up to 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Experience as a senior or staff robotics or software development engineer.
  • Experience managing engineering teams within a high-performing technology organization.
  • Experience developing and sustaining distributed software platform and application architectures that run under dynamic network topologies.
  • Experience with Python and modern systems/application programming languages such as C++ or Rust.
  • Deep understanding of autonomous systems, including perception and payload capabilities across commercial and military mission sets.
  • Experience across the product delivery lifecycle, including manufacturing, system acceptance, deployment, and sustainment.
  • Familiarity with vehicle management systems and systems engineering concepts, including requirements traceability and interface control documents.
  • Familiarity with modular open systems approaches and standard interface protocols for air vehicle mission systems.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Engineering, a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with high-assurance safety-critical software, modeling and simulation, and comprehensive unit, integration, and regression test suites.
  • Experience delivering perception, world modeling, or assured navigation capabilities for autonomous vehicles in GPS-denied environments.
  • Experience building mission planning, operator control, or post-mission debrief tooling for uncrewed systems.
  • Experience integrating third-party or government-furnished payloads into a new host platform, including negotiating interface control documents with external vendors.
  • Experience troubleshooting and analyzing remotely deployed software systems.
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and building team cohesion and capacity.
  • Operational experience with autonomous air systems, ideally Group 3 or shipboard/expeditionary launch and recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Own customer success through the design and delivery of operational mission systems covering Mission Perception, Mission Autonomy, and Payloads.
  • Build and lead the Mission Systems team; hire and manage multidisciplinary engineers, mentor software engineers, and establish team norms, technical standards, and review practices.
  • Define and own the short-, medium-, and long-term technical roadmap for Omen Mission Systems, balancing production commitments with future architecture investments.
  • Own the autonomy software stack for customer-defined missions, including mission design, planning, operation, debrief, and operator command and control.
  • Own integration of payload modules with the host vehicle mission system, including power, bandwidth, timing, and autonomy interfaces; integrate passive and active sensors, launched effects, electronic warfare payloads, and other payloads.
  • Own sensing and world-model development and safe, assured navigation, including GPS-denied operation and recovery to moving or austere landing sites.
  • Lead demonstrations of autonomy, payload operations, and perception kits in increasingly representative environments, from the lab to surrogates to Omen.
  • Partner with the Vehicle Software team on interfaces between the Vehicle Management System and Mission System stacks.
  • Drive architecture selection and design for robotic mission systems, including hardware selection, compute, storage, and network architecture, with consideration of modular open systems approaches.
  • Define and own payload interface control documents governing integration with third-party and government-furnished payload vendors.
  • Travel to support test events, vendor collaboration, end-user engagements, and/or co-location with other teams, up to 25% of the time.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Top-tier benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
