About The Position

The Mission Finance Officer serves as Star Gospel Mission’s financial leader and is responsible for financial stewardship, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, reporting, risk management, and administrative oversight. As a member of the Mission’s leadership team, this position helps ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the organization while supporting programs, capital projects, partnerships, and strategic growth initiatives. As a growing nonprofit, Star Gospel Mission requires a leader who is equally comfortable with financial strategy and hands-on financial administration. In addition to financial planning, board reporting, and grant compliance, this role includes responsibility for accounting functions, data entry, reconciliations, and financial recordkeeping as needed. The ideal candidate is a servant-leader who enjoys building systems, strengthening organizational infrastructure, and helping a mission-driven organization grow responsibly. Success in this role requires both strategic thinking and a willingness to perform routine financial and administrative work when necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience.
  • Nonprofit financial management experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with audits, budgeting, grant management, and board reporting.
  • Comfortable operating in a growing nonprofit environment where leaders balance strategic planning with hands-on accounting, data entry, and administrative responsibilities.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial information and communicate it clearly to board members, staff, and other non-financial audiences.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment, and discretion in handling confidential financial and personnel information.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with the Board of Directors.
  • Comfortable operating in a growing nonprofit environment where leaders balance strategic planning with hands-on accounting, data entry, and administrative responsibilities.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to travel between Mission facilities and community meetings as needed

  • CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Mission’s principal financial advisor to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Lead annual budgeting, financial forecasting, and long-range financial planning.
  • Develop financial models to support organizational growth, program expansion, and capital initiatives.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Prepare monthly financial dashboards, reports, and analyses.
  • Oversee preparation and administration of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor revenues, expenditures, cash flow, liquidity, and financial reserves while providing proactive recommendations to maintain organizational stability.
  • Conduct variance analysis and recommend corrective actions when needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Assist department leaders in budget development and management.
  • Perform or oversee accounting data entry, account reconciliations, and financial record maintenance as needed to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to the Treasurer and Finance Committee.
  • Prepare financial reports and supporting materials for Board meetings.
  • Assist with audit preparation and implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Support Board members in fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Oversee financial compliance for government, foundation, and corporate grants.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of restricted funds.
  • Coordinate grant reimbursement requests and financial reporting requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Assist with financial oversight of construction, renovation, and expansion projects.
  • Monitor capital campaign revenues, pledges, and expenditures.
  • Support financial planning related to acquisitions, integrations, and strategic growth opportunities.
  • Conduct financial analysis and due diligence for major organizational initiatives.
  • Oversee organizational insurance programs and risk management practices.
  • Assist with human resources administration, benefits oversight, and related compliance.
  • Maintain internal controls and financial policies.
  • Ensure safeguarding of Mission assets and resources.
  • Recommend operational efficiencies and administrative improvements.
  • Evaluate, implement, and continually improve financial systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls that support the Mission's long-term growth.
  • Serve as a member of the executive leadership team alongside the Program Officer, Development Officer, and Operations Officer.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to ensure effective stewardship of resources.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and financial excellence.
  • Develop financial analyses, dashboards, and recommendations that support strategic decision-making by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Support organizational decision-making through data-driven analysis and recommendations.
