Outpost is an orbital logistics company developing reusable Earth-return vehicles for in-space manufacturing, on-orbit warehousing, and global delivery. Its CarryAll vehicles are designed to return payloads ranging from 200 kilograms to 10 metric tons, land within 10 meters of a target, and be refurbished and launched again. Outpost supports national security, commercial cargo, research and development, and critical-aid missions. The Mission Engineering team defines missions from launch integration and on-orbit operations through deorbit, reentry, descent, and recovery. This role establishes the mission-design and flight-safety discipline within the team, working with GNC, aerothermal, structures, avionics, and operations engineers and representing Outpost to the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation (AST). The position is based in Playa Vista, California, and requires in-person work five days per week. The engineer owns flight-safety analysis for reentry missions under 14 CFR Part 450; develops trajectory simulations and Monte Carlo analyses; models breakup, debris, and risk; and defines targeting, corridors, recovery zones, and flight hazard areas. The role also prepares FAA licensing and compliance materials, leads technical discussions with FAA-AST, establishes operational safety limits and criteria, and serves as flight-safety lead during rehearsals and live operations. Additional work includes integrating vehicle and hazard models, supporting customer and launch-provider analyses, and developing and maintaining verified, validated, and configuration-controlled analysis tools and processes.
