About The Position

The Mining Engineer will manage day-to-day operations at the quarry, ensuring reliable and sustainable operations with minimal maintenance issues. This role involves developing and implementing quarry schedules and procedures, allocating resources to maximize productivity, and ensuring efficient and cost-effective operations to meet business demands with consistent quality products. The engineer will analyze production and maintenance records to identify problems and recommend solutions, control quarry activities to achieve cost and quality targets, and manage local capital expenditure within budget. Additionally, the role requires liaising with other functional areas to understand product needs and integrate them into manufacturing activities. The Mining Engineer is also responsible for ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards, managing SEQ compliance, and improving the safety culture. This position serves as the local representative of Omya’s interests, liaising with the community and ensuring industrial relations agreements are updated and implemented. The role includes ensuring timely and accurate monthly reporting and leading, directing, evaluating, and developing a team of supervisors, fulfilling HR responsibilities for the local team in coordination with HR and Operations Director.

Requirements

  • University (Bachelor’s Degree) in Mining Engineering, Minerals Engineering or similar discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in quarry operations.
  • Solid experience in managerial or supervisory position.
  • Knowledge in mining and drilling, understanding of quarry exploitation.
  • Good people management and interpersonal skills, with cultural sensitivity and strong social competences.
  • Highly motivated and results orientated.
  • Ability to find solutions and proactively solve problems.
  • Ability to manage projects and drive to completion.
  • Effective planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent management skills: supervising, monitoring, team building and solving team issues.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a professional group environment and local communities.
  • Good command of both oral and written local language and English are desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • Planning, permitting and operational experience in quarrying operations would be an advantage.
  • Good command of both oral and written additional language is beneficial.
  • Available to travel occasionally within region, as required, to support the business.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations at the quarry ensuring reliable and sustainable operations with minimal maintenance issues.
  • Develop and implement quarry schedules and procedures and allocate labor and capital resources to maximize productivity.
  • Ensure the efficient and cost effective operation of the quarry in order to meet the business demand by production of consistent quality products suitable for the market.
  • Analyze production, maintenance, and malfunction records to identify problems and recommend solutions (for example changes to procedures, workflow, or equipment) that will improve performance.
  • Control quarry activities, material flow and inventory to achieve cost and quality targets and production schedules.
  • Manage local capital expenditure within the defined budget in line with the business plan, and ensure to complete projects in accordance to schedules, budget and quality (with support from the Engineering Team).
  • Liaise with functional or operational area managers (for example in supply and logistics, or sales) to understand their current and future product needs and develop plans, cost estimates, and schedules for integrating these needs into existing manufacturing activities.
  • Ensure the company meets safety, environmental and quality standards (act in consultation with the Sustainability Manager).
  • Manage SEQ compliance, as well as compliance with site related regulations for the quarry, including Omya employees and contractors.
  • Manage the ongoing improvement of the safety culture and behavior.
  • Be the local representative of Omya’s interests.
  • Liaise with the community as necessary to ensure that Omya’s reputation is enhanced.
  • Ensure industrial relations site agreement is updated and implemented.
  • Ensure all site monthly reporting occurs in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Lead, direct, evaluate, and develop a team of supervisors who are responsible for various production activities.
  • Fulfill some HR responsibilities (attraction, remuneration, training, development etc.) for local Omya team, in coordination with Director Operations and Human Resources department.
