About The Position

Cargill is seeking motivated individuals to join their global team as Mining Engineer Co-ops. This program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, underground salt mine environment. Co-ops will learn from experienced professionals, contribute to critical projects, and develop skills in operations leadership, maintenance, and project engineering. The program is designed to provide exposure to both technical and management aspects of the mining industry, with the potential for future internship or full-time employment opportunities. Requirements

  • Must be able to work in an underground environment
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or a Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or other related engineering discipline
  • Bachelor’s/master’s degree to be/recently completed between December 2027 – May 2030
  • Right to work in the U.S. that is not based solely on possession of a student visa or a visa sponsored by a third-party employer
  • Able to complete a 7–8-month co-op (May - December 2027)
  • Candidates must be geographically flexible and willing to relocate for a co-op/internship opportunity to either Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY
  • Proven ability to work optimally with individuals from a diverse set of backgrounds and cultures
  • Must possess a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness in completing work with limited guidance

Nice To Haves

  • Sophomores, juniors, or seniors currently enrolled in an accredited engineering program in a relevant field.
  • Mining or heavy industrial co-op, or intern experience preferred.
  • Overall 2.7 GPA preferred.
  • Ability to relate technical knowledge to job-related duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Lead production or maintenance employees, project teams, contractors, or technical operations teams.
  • Execute critical initiatives and projects in a fast-paced, underground environment.
  • Gain experience in Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering roles.
  • Learn mining techniques such as surveying and mapping, room and pillar mining operations, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and mining safety best practices.
  • Work hand in hand with other team members on engineering work and champion their own projects.
  • Gain exposure to high voltage power infrastructure and programming and control systems.
  • Learn how to safely operate and automate equipment.
  • Develop and implement best practices in maintenance and design for electrical reliability.
  • Directly supervise operators and production activities.
  • Participate in daily production management meetings.
  • Comprehend and handle MSHA federal regulations and compliance programs including environmental, health, safety, maintenance, and housekeeping.
  • Develop teams of production employees, including hiring, scheduling, motivating, and handling employee relations issues.
  • Be involved in process optimization, equipment, and process reliability.
  • Run capital projects.
  • Be responsible for business case development, vendor selection, budget management, and project management responsibilities for major projects and improvements.
  • Be involved with various innovation processes, idea generation systems, and reliability-centered design.
  • Implement technical initiatives driven from global Process Development Groups, Centers of Excellence, and Research & Development.
  • Showcase skills and gain hands-on experience working on different projects from designing and upgrading current systems, to reviewing and updating plant drawings.
