About The Position

The Mine/Production Supervisor is responsible for providing technical knowledge, operations experience, and management skills in the daily direction and performance of the safe, efficient, and quality work performed by mine operations. This role reports to the Mine Superintendent and will be responsible and capable, on a daily basis, of obtaining short and long-term objectives, modifying shift plans to maximize resources, and leading the mining team in all safety and production-related matters. This includes supporting and directing personnel in the production cycle, accurately completing shift logs, and performing routine safety audits and workplace inspections. The Mine Supervisor must be flexible to the changing needs of the underground mining operation. This role involves rotating through all three shifts (days, afternoons, midnights) and regularly working overtime (extended hours, weekends). The Mine/Production Supervisor will provide leadership to a unionized labour force of approximately 10 to 25 direct reports, working on a rotating shift in the Mine or Rock Salt Mill department. This role places emphasis on promoting workplace safety and the efficient production of rock salt, while ensuring that production meets acceptable levels of product quality. The ideal candidate will consistently demonstrate strong leadership skills that inspires, motivates, and promotes teamwork within the Production department, as well as with other departments within the company. The Mine/Production Supervisor may also be responsible for maintenance employees on certain shifts, as deemed necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure their team operates in a safe manner, and in adherence with all company occupational health and safety policies.
  • Ensure employees have access to the required training and development for the safe and efficient operation of the mine.
  • Promote and maintain adequate levels of housekeeping.
  • Review and ensure incident investigations and reports are completed according to acceptable standards and in a timely fashion (OII report – immediately, near miss and first aid – 24 hours).
  • Monitor and ensure workplace planned safety inspections and tests related to the department are completed according to acceptable standards and in a timely fashion.
  • Monitor and ensure corrective actions related to the department and stemming from incident investigations, workplace inspections, safety audits and JOHS recommendations are responded to and completed in a timely fashion.
  • Promote the goal of 100 percent attendance at monthly department safety meetings.
  • Provide timely feedback to all employees and to fulfill all performance management duties, which includes providing direction, feedback, coaching, counselling, and discipline (where required). Performance management activities should include employee performance with respect to health and safety, production, quality, and attendance at work.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all relevant information, including performance feedback, in employee files.
  • Provide direction to team members on a day-to-day basis, based on the priorities outlined by the Production Manager or other members of the Management team.
  • Ensure effective communication with team members, through the implementation of daily huddle board meetings. This includes the communication of new company initiatives, and to represent the company and support these initiatives to ensure their successful implementation.
  • Operate in line with the company’s policies and procedures, including the current collective agreement.
  • Plan workforce requirements, in conjunction with the Production Manager, to ensure adequate coverage to meet the needs of the overall production schedule.
  • Guide the team in execution of the Production plan to the best of his/her ability, and to meet production and quality targets as set out by the Management team.
  • Adjust the production plan, when required, to ensure acceptable levels or product quality.
  • Make production decisions with the use of “throughput thinking”, with the goal of meeting the needs of the Mine’s internal customer, the Rock Salt Mill.
  • Ensure proper utilization of machinery and equipment, including timely communication of breakdowns, and rotation of equipment to maintenance in adherence with the planned PM schedule.
  • Maintain close liaison with quality assurance staff to ensure quality meets or exceeds customers’ expectations.
  • Be an advocate of continuous improvement and a catalyst for change, including the effective management of the change process.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and communicate ideas for improvement to the production process.
