About The Position

As our Mine Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the mine while ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. This role involves the development, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive occupational health and safety plan aimed at promoting a culture of safety, reducing risks, and ensuring the well-being of all employees, contractors, and stakeholders. This role also requires coordinating with technical services such as engineering, geology, and operations teams. As a member of the senior management team, the Mine Manager plays a critical role in supporting the overall business strategy, fostering a productive and motivated workforce, and driving continuous improvement in health and safety standards. We are located on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve issues in a timely manner. About Us The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 500 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. S.) or equivalent in mine engineering, geology, geological engineering or related field.
  • Eight or more years of related experience and/or training, in a supervisory capacity.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • MSHA instructor certification required.
  • Ability to obtain ATF Possessor's Clearance.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • Pass a position-specific physical demands assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the mine while ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Developing, implementing, and administering a comprehensive occupational health and safety plan.
  • Promoting a culture of safety, reducing risks, and ensuring the well-being of all employees, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Coordinating with technical services such as engineering, geology, and operations teams.
  • Supporting the overall business strategy as a member of the senior management team.
  • Fostering a productive and motivated workforce.
  • Driving continuous improvement in health and safety standards.
  • Working independently, identifying, and resolving issues in a timely manner.
  • Reporting directly to the VP/General Manager, and having overall responsibility for safe, healthy and cost effective mine production, engineering, and administration of a 2300 TPD underground polymetallic mine.
  • Managing capital projects, equipment purchases and utilization, mining methods, development geology, underground diamond drilling, annual and longer-term site planning, budgeting, and allocation.
  • Developing and implementing company policies and procedures to facilitate corporate objectives.
  • Championing health and safety and environment as the top priority, maintaining safe and efficient operations, leading by personal example, ensuring proper working conditions, and helping to develop effective plans, systems and procedures.
  • Ensuring that all employees and contractors perform safely and in compliance with all company policies as well as government regulations and the Health and Safety Management System and Environmental Management Systems.
  • Managing and developing a multi-disciplinary team including Mining Engineers, Geologists and Mine Production and establishing priorities to maintain safe, cost effective production per mine plan.
  • Developing, submitting for approval and implementing mine operating plans, policies, annual operating and capital budgets, and forecasts in accordance with the company’s and unit’s strategic objectives, to ensure operational efficiency and long-term viability.
  • Monitoring and reporting performance against budgeted targets in terms of production goals and costs, assuring that budget goals for production, development and costs are safely met.
  • Building, developing and managing a team capable of carrying out needed strategies, focusing on quality and continuous improvement, and enhancing employee relations.
  • Ensuring that talented, motivated and productive team members are recruited and retained.
  • Participating in the development of hiring standards that will ensure the attainment of long-term objectives.
  • Ensuring the alignment of group and individual goals and objectives with Company strategies, long-term plans and annual goals, supporting operations goals with relevant performance plans.
  • Establishing standards of performance for operating management.
  • Directing performance management processes to ensure ongoing assessment, evaluation and communication with operating employees regarding established goals, objectives and performance standards.
  • Collaborating with the maintenance group to ensure maintenance and repair of equipment, balancing optimization of production with necessary preventative maintenance.
  • Demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the competency and performance of the team through the continuing development of education and training programs, and by providing challenges, appropriate opportunities and rewards.
  • Ensuring that the operation’s short- and long-term production targets, schedules and mine plans are met through effective supervision of subordinates.
  • Acting as a member of the senior management team with a support/team role for the entire business in addition to the primary responsibility of the mine.
  • Filling in for the General Manager in his absence.
  • Other supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
  • Leading in the development, implementation and administration of a comprehensive occupational health and safety plan to promote health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Working with federal, state, local regulatory agencies to stay apprised of regulatory laws.
  • Ensuring that all Greens Creek operational activities are in accordance with the safety, health and environmental standards and regulations set forth by HGCMC and federal, state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Working with various stakeholders to ensure accident and near-miss incident investigations are conducted on a timely basis, and that effective assessment and analysis, identification of corrective action, and desired follow-up are achieved.
  • Providing support and expertise in identifying site risks and hazards, and providing recommendations on appropriate actions to mitigate risks.
  • Overseeing and directing all required Health and Safety training for Greens Creek safety personnel, managers, employees and contractors, including the maintenance of company and regulatory records and files.
  • Coordinating internal audits and inspections of Greens Creek operations, for compliance with company and regulatory Health and Safety requirements, provide recommendations and conduct programs to mitigate gaps in compliance, and follow up to make sure that non-compliance issues are corrected in timely fashion.
  • Overseeing the administration of the Workers’ Compensation Program by working closely with insurance carriers and treating physicians to minimize employee lost time and claim costs.
  • Liaison with insurance carrier’s site inspections and risk mitigation.
  • Compiling and submitting accident reports and safety activity statistics required by regulatory agencies such as MSHA, Workers’ Compensation Claims Adjusters, and Company staff.
  • Ensuring that medical and emergency response needs are effectively addressed and administered including effective emergency response teams such as mine rescue and surface rescue teams.
  • Overseeing occupational health surveillance program (sampling, sampling data analysis, and employee notification).
  • Providing recommendations on how to reduce identified exposures and ensure compliance with regulations and company standards.
  • Ensuring the integration of health and safety measures into all new processes, equipment, and contract work.
  • Building, developing and managing a team capable of carrying out Health and Safety strategies, focusing on continuous improvement that ensures talented, motivated and productive team members are recruited and retained.
  • Acting as a member of the senior management team with a support/team role for the entire business in addition to the primary responsibility of the Health and Safety Department.
  • Possible incident commander for health and safety related incidents.
  • Possessing superior organizational skills to plan, monitor and adjust to dynamic operating issues.
  • Gathering, analyzing, and reporting information; as well as, maintaining organized and current files.
  • Possessing expertise in emergency management and the incident command system, knowledge and proficiency for evaluating and mitigating occupational exposures, hazard recognition and mitigation, risk management, and contractor management.
