About The Position

The NRC is seeking a Millwright (Machinist) to join their Real Property Planning and Management Branch. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a team environment with dynamic priorities and daily challenges, and who is open to learning and contributing ideas. The position requires self-driven individuals comfortable working independently under the general supervision of the Site Operations and Maintenance Manager. The Millwright will be responsible for the maintenance, installation, inspection, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of a variety of building systems and equipment, including rotating equipment (pumps, motors), HVAC components, internal water system control valves, and air compressors. This includes specialized research equipment like hydraulic systems for laboratory testing. The role also involves general facility preventative and corrective maintenance, basic building automation system functions, daily inspections of lighting and plumbing, and occasional carpentry and plumbing tasks. The position requires on-call availability for emergencies.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of secondary school according to provincial standards.
  • Possession of a Machinist or Millwright trade certification in accordance with provincial standards.
  • Significant experience (minimum 5 years) installing, removing, repairing and maintaining complex and/or standard industrial equipment in a refrigeration plant and/or a research facility such as hydraulic systems and nitrogen systems.
  • Significant experience (minimum 5 years) in the supervision, coordination and support of contractor activities in compliance with safety regulations and ensuring efficiency and standards are met.
  • Experience monitoring building systems using a Building Automation System (BAS) and/or a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position which include but may not be limited to: crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, ability to hear to diagnose mechanical troubles, and the ability to handle heavy and bulky objects.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Reliability Status, which requires verification of background information over a period of 5 years.
  • English language proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, calibrating, and repairing a wide range of building systems and equipment including rotating equipment (pumps, motors), HVAC system components, internal water system control valves (domestic water and closed loop systems), and air compressors.
  • Maintaining all equipment, including specialized research equipment such as hydraulic systems used for laboratory testing purposes, to required standards.
  • Being responsive to research needs and equipment failures.
  • Working as part of a team to support other trades on site.
  • Routinely performing work independently and maintaining a high level of accuracy and safety.
  • Performing general facility preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Learning to perform basic functions with building automation systems.
  • Conducting daily inspections of lighting and plumbing systems.
  • Performing preventative and corrective maintenance activities such as carpentry and plumbing.
  • Being on call for emergencies on occasion.
