The Military & Family Life Counselor (MFLC) provides Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of military service members and their families at military installations and off-installation locations. Services include non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling; assessment; brief counseling; consultation; action planning; referrals and linkage to resources; and follow-up as indicated. Counselors may serve in Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools, community schools, youth programs, summer camps, and on-demand assignments. School-assigned counselors must have experience working in a school setting. The counselor supports school staff and personnel, provides parent training and guidance, and delivers health, wellness, and other presentations. The role also includes consultation with parents, school personnel, and installation command regarding behavioral health issues affecting children and youth. Counselors collaborate with installation and military branch Points of Contact (POCs), community resources, and Regional Supervisors and Directors to ensure services meet local needs and remain within program scope. The position requires daily documentation of counselor activity through a smartphone or web application while maintaining confidentiality and anonymity. Counselors must remain visible in schools and follow line-of-sight protocol, ensuring another responsible adult can see the counselor and child at all times. They manage duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations according to DoD protocol, respond to critical incidents and approved special requests, participate in supervision, training, quality-improvement activities, and other assigned contract activities. The counselor may need to flex their schedule to respond to urgent requests and perform other duties as assigned.
