About The Position

The Military and Family Life Counselor (MFLC) School Counselor provides Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of military service members and their families, at military installations and off-installation locations. School counselors are assigned to Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and community schools, as well as youth programs, summer camps, and on-demand assignments. School assignment requires prior experience working in a school setting. The counselor provides non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling, including assessment, brief counseling, consultation, action planning, referrals and follow-up as indicated. The role also supports school staff and personnel, provides parent training and guidance, and delivers health and wellness presentations and other activities for children and youth. Counselors coordinate with installation and military branch Points of Contact (POCs), maintain community resource relationships, and ensure services meet installation and school needs. The position requires maintaining visibility in assigned schools and following line-of-sight protocol, so another responsible adult can see the counselor and child at all times. Counselors document activity daily using a smartphone or web application while protecting confidentiality and anonymity. They follow DoD protocols for duty-to-warn and restricted-reporting situations, consult with regional leadership, participate in supervision and training, and may respond to critical incidents, urgent requests, and other assigned program activities. The schedule may be flexed to address urgent requests. Candidates must hold a valid, unrestricted independent counseling license and a master’s degree in a mental-health-related field. The role requires less than two years of post-licensure clinical experience, experience working with children and youth, and knowledge of child and adolescent development or psychology. Candidates must be able to work with military members, children, and families from diverse backgrounds; communicate effectively; respond to emergent situations; and meet applicable clearance, citizenship, language, and driver-license requirements. Salary range: $59,922–$100,280.
