About The Position

River Vista Behavioral Health is a new, 128-bed facility located along the bluffs overlooking the San Joaquin River, dedicated to providing high-quality behavioral health services to the Central Valley. The hospital employs over 250 individuals, including clinicians, nurses, mental health technicians, support staff, and administration. We are seeking a forward-thinking and compassionate Milieu Specialist to join our Nursing Team. The Milieu Specialist is responsible for providing training and monitoring of therapeutic milieu management on the hospital units. This includes aspects of program content and philosophy, patient management, environmental management, and staff competency.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in a behavioral/mental health setting required.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Successful completion of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training required (may be obtained during new hire orientation).
  • Strong knowledge of The Joint Commission, HCFA, OSHA regulations, and patient rights standards and all other applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing mental health care facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with monitoring new employees during the orientation period in conjunction with the Nurse Managers.
  • Works closely with nursing in providing safety and milieu management.
  • Responsible for patient harm reduction, verbal de-escalation, and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) practice and training to ensure staff and patient safety.
  • Collaborates with staff, charge nurses, house supervisors, and other leaders to address patient safety issues related to the milieu.
  • Ensures program schedules are followed, provides role modeling for managing patients with psychosis/aggression, trains employees, and implements changes to the Milieu.
  • Floats to all units in the Hospital as needed.
  • Performs assessments and recommendations related to therapeutic milieu management.
  • Assists in providing appropriate activities for patients.
  • Assists in group and individual training for facility staff on milieu management and related topics through formal training sessions and mentoring direct care staff in patient care areas.
  • Assists in coordination with nursing leadership regarding the implementation of milieu management best practices.
  • Provides orientation and ongoing education/training for clinical staff and leadership as needed.
  • Rounds units and reports any problem areas to nursing leadership.
  • Assists House Supervisor as needed.
  • Maintains regular communication with nursing leadership regarding any therapeutic milieu issues.
  • Assists in providing oversight and coordination for assigned special projects.

  • Assesses patients for behaviors consistent with developmental stages and notes any deviations.
  • Recognizes acting out behavior of adolescent-specific age groups and sets appropriate limits.
  • Demonstrates awareness of learning disabilities and translates treatment/program expectations to learning-disabled adolescents.
  • Relates to adolescent patients in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Utilizes seclusion and restraint procedures with an understanding of the need for modification regarding smaller body sizes, abandonment issues, and history of abuse.
  • Gathers information from the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team and uses judgments based on knowledge of adult behaviors in treatment planning and interventions.
  • Recognizes behaviors and sets appropriate limits.
  • Utilizes seclusion/restraint procedures applicable to adult body size and past history of violent or emotional behaviors and/or history of abuse.
  • Utilizes theoretical concepts to guide effective practice of adult care.
  • Maintains knowledge of the Adult program rules, protocols, and handbook guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of the developmental tasks and sociological theories of aging.
  • Utilizes theoretical concepts to guide effective practice of gerontological health care and behavioral care.
  • Gathers appropriate information from the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team and uses therapeutic judgments based on knowledge of gerontological health/behavioral care practices to develop a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Knowledgeable of special patient needs related to chemical dependency.
  • Effectively collaborates with other chemical dependency staff professionals in facilitating the plan of care.
  • Maintains awareness of how personal issues related to co-dependency can impact work performance/relationships.
