MIG Welder (Contract, 2–6 Weeks)

Durin Mining Technologies Corp.•El Segundo, CA
•$100 - $175•Onsite

About The Position

Durin is hiring an experienced MIG welder for a full-time, 2–6 week contract at its El Segundo headquarters. The welder will finish a large, partially fit-up steel weldment—a rod-handling frame for a drill rig—and support other structural welding during the rig build. Work must use production MIG (GMAW) or flux-core (FCAW), rather than TIG. Mining or drilling experience is not required. The role involves welding steel structures and frames for drilling equipment, including plate, gussets, bulkheads, and tube-frame members. The welder will also perform fit-up, tacking, grinding, cleanup, repairs, and rework; read fabrication drawings and weld symbols; manage heat and distortion; and maintain alignment within tolerance. The position is based on-site in the El Segundo shop, has a full-time weekday schedule described as flexible, and pays $100–175 per hour. The start date is ASAP.

Requirements

  • Several years of hands-on structural or production welding on steel, with GMAW (MIG) as the main process.
  • Ability to weld in every position on heavy plate and structural steel.
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings and weld symbols.
  • Experience with fit-up, grinding, and related shop tools.
  • Ability to work quickly and consistently while producing good-quality welds; applicants must be able to show pictures of past welds.
  • Safety-minded approach and pride in maintaining a clean work area.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including moving and lifting heavy parts.
  • Availability to work full-time on-site for the full 2–6 week contract.
  • Willingness to work from the company headquarters in El Segundo.
  • Must bring personal welding gear, including a welding machine, hood, leathers, and PPE.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS certification, such as AWS D1.1 structural, or other current welding certifications.
  • Flux-core (FCAW) experience in addition to MIG.
  • Experience with heavy equipment, mining, oilfield, or other industrial machinery weldments.
  • Experience working to inspection by a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • Interest in staying on for future work as the build continues.

Responsibilities

  • Perform production MIG (GMAW) and/or flux-core (FCAW) welding on steel structures and frames for drilling equipment, including plate, gussets, bulkheads, and tube-frame members.
  • Finish welding on a large weldment that is already partially fit and tacked, including welding internal gussets through access panels and in tight spaces.
  • Perform fit-up, tacking, grinding, weld cleanup, and repair or cut out and redo welds when needed.
  • Read and work from fabrication drawings and weld symbols, follow engineers’ direction, and flag problems before they cause rework.
  • Manage heat and distortion on long structures and maintain alignment within tolerance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow shop safety rules, including hot-work and fire-watch practices, PPE, and end-of-shift housekeeping.
  • Report to Nelson and work with the mechanical engineering and assembly team on a tight build schedule.
