About The Position

Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS) is a network of high-performing charter schools in the South Bronx. Together with the Latino Pastoral Action Center and parents, FLACS aims to empower all K-12 students to excel academically, take responsibility for their own learning, and affirm human values, today, in college, and beyond. Under the supervision of the School Principal, the Speech Pathologist/Therapist provides mandated speech and language services to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology or Communicative Disorders
  • NYS Teachers of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) / Teachers of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH) required
  • NYS Department of Education fingerprint clearance and criminal background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • New York State licensure in Speech and Language Pathology preferred
  • A bilingual TSSH /TSSLD extension preferred
  • Prior experience, especially in an urban school, is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective speech services in school-based settings that help students to meet the goals on their IEPs.
  • Keep and maintain thorough, accurate records and documents for each session electronically.
  • Monitor, track progress and provide support on IEP goal(s).
  • Manage the cases of students whose only service is Speech Services, including tracking their academic progress in classes and writing their IEPs.
  • Write reports for students who receive Speech services to help develop the IEP.
  • Participate in professional development, professional learning communities, grade-level activities and school wide functions.
  • Collaborate with other special education and general education teachers to support the needs of students.
  • Share best practices with colleagues by participating in professional learning communities, grade-level or content teams, and cross-school groups.
  • Seek to actively know students’ strengths and challenge areas and communicate these effectively with families.
  • Maintain strong classroom management and implements school wide policies and procedures to ensure a safe, caring and orderly school environment.
  • Establish a classroom culture of caring, respect and rapport which holds all students to high academic standards, promotes inclusion, fosters a love of learning, and builds positive relationships.
