About The Position

Lynn Public Schools is a diverse and dynamic educational district serving approximately 17,000 students across 29 school sites. The district is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and responds to the social-emotional needs of every student and family. Thurgood Middle School is seeking a Social Studies teacher to join its community. The ideal candidate will have experience in lesson planning, assessment, data-driven instruction, and providing student feedback. The teacher will adhere to the MA Curriculum Frameworks and the district's curriculum map, utilizing 'Collections' as the primary resource. Specific grade level and class organization details will be provided by the principal.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Valid license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in History 5-12 or Social Science 5-12
  • SEI Endorsement
  • Experience with lesson planning
  • Experience with assessing
  • Experience using data to direct instruction
  • Experience providing students with regular feedback about their progress towards learning goals
  • Knowledge of MA Curriculum Frameworks standards and their progression
  • Knowledge of the district’s curriculum map
  • Knowledge of the primary resource, Collections

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Additional content area licensure is encouraged
  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism, and bias, and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing standards-based lessons with clear objectives
  • Providing appropriate and effective learning experiences for students from a wide range of socio-economic levels and cultural backgrounds
  • Designing and demonstrating differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students (Modify, scaffold, etc. for Special Education and English Learner Education)
  • Using a variety of formal and informal assessments to accurately measure student progress toward mastery of grade-level standards and to modify further instruction
  • Providing a motivating and stimulating, safe and supportive learning environment
  • Adapting the social studies lessons for individual, small group, and remedial instruction to meet the needs of identified students or subgroups of students
  • Developing and maintaining pupil-teacher relationships conducive to effective teaching and learning
  • Maintaining a growth mindset
  • Establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior
  • Participating in school-wide and department-wide professional development activities
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community, including collaborating with colleagues on curriculum, lesson and assessment design
  • Using computers and other technology to support student learning in and out of the classroom
