About The Position

Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS) is seeking a Middle School Math Learning Specialist for the 2026-2027 school year. BUGS is a progressive middle school focused on sustainability education, diverse-by-design, and community-based learning. Requirements

  • Passion for teaching and developing within the English Language Arts area
  • Commitment to collaboration, co-teaching, educating for sustainability, and ongoing professional growth
  • Experience teaching within an ICT setting, utilizing a variety of co-teaching models
  • Evidence of differentiation in lesson plans
  • Experience working with IEPs
  • Utilize and/or are familiar with Standards Based Grading and Reporting
  • Desire to work in a heterogeneous classroom with a range of ability levels and students of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds
  • Experience working with middle school/young adolescents
  • Valid New York State Teaching Certification or valid New York State Students With Disabilities Certification
  • Bachelor's degree, required
  • Experienced in planning and teaching academic interventions in Math
  • Experienced in data driven instruction
  • Experience in implementing support around foundational math skills such as computation, number sense, and building mathematical vocabulary
  • Commitment to collaboration, sustainability, continuous professional growth, and student achievement
  • Proven track record in data collection and corresponding student achievement

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of teaching experience
  • Master's degree
  • Valid New York State Special Education certification, highly preferred
  • Three years of teaching experience/special education classroom instruction, highly preferred
  • Experience using Renaissance Learn Platform (STAR Math/Reading) or iReady)
  • Familiarity with the Desmos Math curriculum a plus

  • Communicating and collaborating regularly with families, colleagues, and students

  • Actively developing professional practice using the BUGS Teacher Professional Practice Commitments as a framework
  • Researching and implementing culturally responsive classroom practices by participating in a Professional Learning Community throughout the school year to identify best practices that would be embedded into the classrooms and curricula
  • Planning thoughtfully to connect Educating for Sustainability standards, C.A.R.E.S. values, and Project Based Learning into daily planning and execution of lessons, exploring different ways to make content accessible and relevant to students
