About The Position

The Middle School Counselor will develop, implement, and support a building-level guidance program focused on addressing student needs, particularly those struggling academically. This role involves specific programs targeting identified needs and requires a commitment to fostering student growth socially, emotionally, physically, and academically within a K-8 school configuration. The counselor will collaborate with administration and staff to create a positive, safe, and kid-friendly learning environment, demonstrating strong work ethics, creativity, and an open mind to innovative ideas. A key aspect of the role is providing leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating the guidance plan, assisting students in self-understanding and potential maximization, and supporting parents and staff in understanding and meeting student developmental needs. The counselor will also formulate and interpret program goals, implement research-based strategies to close the achievement gap, partner with higher education institutions for college and career readiness, and assist in developing interim assessments. Additionally, the role involves obtaining necessary materials and equipment, promoting effective utilization of resources, assisting with educational and psychosocial needs interpretation, participating in curriculum development, and maintaining professional competence.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in secondary counseling.
  • Certification by the Arkansas Department of Education.
  • Arkansas certification in Guidance & Counseling 6th-8th grade.
  • At least five (5) years’ experience as a teacher and/or counselor.
  • Evidence of experience in working with students struggling academically.
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to quality desegregated education.
  • Ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period.
  • Ability to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year.

  • Evidence of the ability and willingness to successfully integrate the PLTW curriculum where feasible for PLTW.

  • Formulate, clarify, and interpret the goals and objectives of the school counseling program.
  • Implement research-based materials and strategies targeted at closing the achievement gap.
  • Initiate partnering with local institutions of higher education to remediate students.
  • Assist in developing and implementing interim assessments to monitor students’ progress.
  • Assist in obtaining materials, supplies, and equipment for approved instructional programs for struggling students.
  • Promote effective utilization of school and community resources.
  • Assist students, staff, and parents in interpreting and using pertinent information relating to educational and psychosocial needs.
  • Participate in curriculum development and change.
  • Maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Participate and successfully complete required Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and The Leader in Me professional development.
