About The Position

Hackley School seeks a Middle School Computer Science Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The preferred candidate will have an appropriate background (an undergraduate degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred) and experience teaching middle school (grades 5-8). The Middle School Computer Science Teacher is responsible for teaching students to become proficient and comfortable with utilizing age-appropriate technological tools and programming concepts. Candidates should also have a strong interest in the academic, social, and emotional well-being of Middle School students; be willing to work collaboratively with the computer science department and the broader faculty community; be willing to work as an academic advisor to Middle School students; and be interested in contributing to the extracurricular life of Hackley’s Middle School. Reporting Structure The Middle Computer Science Teacher reports to the Middle School Director and the Computer Science Department Chair. Requirements

  • Experience teaching computer science in Middle School grades, a successful track record of designing and implementing technology curricula, and proficiency in project-based learning and design thinking
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrative, instinctive aptitude, and broad knowledge of Maker tools and computer science education, including age-appropriate programming languages, curricula, computer functionality, and educational technology tools, including, but not limited to: Scratch, Blockly, Python, Javascript, LEGO Edu, Minecraft Edu, Micro:bit, Google Suite, Canva, Code.org, Scratch, ISTE & CSTA standards.
  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Positivity, energy, and a deep commitment to collaborating with others
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within a school community

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement an innovative, interactive, engaging, and evolving computer science curriculum with a strong focus on computational thinking, programming logic, digital fluency, literacy, and citizenship
  • Incorporate hands-on, technology-driven activities where students design, build, and tinker to solve problems in meaningful and authentic ways
  • Lead teaching sections based on faculty strengths, cross-divisional, and departmental needs that foster a variety of technological skills while utilizing educational technology and computer science platforms, with proficiency in MacOS
  • Create an inclusive and engaging classroom environment that employs effective and differentiated teaching strategies and assessments to support diverse levels of technical ability and skill sets
  • Maintain organization and inventory management of classroom space and materials.
  • Develop, support, and coordinate programs, including, but not limited to: pairing of Middle School students with Lower/Upper School Computer Science students
  • Support the growth of the Computer Science Department’s K-12 instructional program
  • Demonstrate active, positive, and professional participation in faculty meetings and effective, eager engagement with students, families, colleagues, and administration
  • Participate in ongoing professional development related to emerging technologies, curriculum design, and pedagogies relevant to computer science, and the impact current trends have on Middle School students
  • Serve as a Middle School grade-level advisor
