About The Position

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as Middle School Class 4 Science Teacher and Advisor. Our division begins with Class 4, the transitional year into Middle School, and continues through Class 7. The Middle School Science Teacher reports to the Head of Middle School and will teach four sections of science and serve as an advisor in Middle School, grade 4. This position necessitates a thorough understanding of Middle School children as well as a desire to work with and advocate for them. Chapin’s Science Department believes all Chapin students are scientists in the making. In Middle School Science, students work towards developing their skills as scientists with engaging and relevant content across science disciplines. The Science Department participates in ongoing curricular and pedagogical work that recognizes the inquiring scientist in every student and aligns with Next Generation Science Standards. The core of the work that students do in middle school science is asking questions and then answering these questions through authentic scientific practices, such as planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, conducting research, developing models, and using the engineering design process. Students are given the opportunity to model the work of professional scientists. Chapin’s science professionals work as a team to develop and refine a multi-layered pedagogy with an appropriate balance of access and challenge; competition and collaboration; inquiry and instruction; skills and conceptual understanding. Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Minimum of two years experience in Middle School science instruction or equivalent
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues
• Advisory experience or equivalent

Nice To Haves

• Master's degree in sciences or science education or other related fields
• Experience with a variety of curricular programs such as Trout in the Classroom
• Familiarity and commitment to project-based and inquiry-based learning

Responsibilities

• Teach all four sections of Class 4 Science
• Serve as a member of the Class 4 Team and as an advisor to a group of approximately 10-12 students in Class 4
• Report to the Head of Middle School, while working closely with members of the Middle School and K-12 Science Departments
