About The Position

This internship supports BMO Capital Markets' Middle Market M&A group, which advises founders, family-owned businesses, and private equity sponsors on sell-side and buy-side transactions across North America. The Business Development function is responsible for building relationships with referral sources, sourcing opportunities, and converting prospects into engaged mandates. The intern will support the Middle Market M&A Business Development effort, expanding client relationships and driving strategic growth initiatives across BMO Commercial bank. This role offers exposure to investment banking from the origination side, working directly with senior bankers and the BD team on activities that drive the group's deal pipeline.

Requirements

  • Strong Excel skills; comfort organizing data and building clean, presentable outputs

  • Genuine interest in M&A, private capital markets, and relationship-driven business
  • Highly motivated self-starter who can work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple workstreams, and meet timely deadlines
  • An undergraduate degree with academic coursework in finance, economics, or accounting with outstanding academic achievement.
  • 0 - 3 years of successive relevant experience within investment and/or corporate banking.
  • Shows initiative, prioritizes work, multi-tasks effectively.
  • Expertise in using financial computer applications and database management tools.
  • Creative, insightful, and resourceful.
  • Strong interpersonal skills within a demanding team environment.

  • Prior finance or banking exposure (coursework, club, or internship) is a plus but not required

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance BD tracking infrastructure (Salesforce management, meeting logs, prospect and COI tracking)
  • Research prospective clients and COIs — including attorneys, wealth advisors, and accountants
  • Build target lists and company profiles for sector-specific BD campaigns to support pre and post-deal marketing
  • Help prepare meeting materials, including pre-meeting briefs and tailored pitch content
  • Support tracking and analysis of industry conference events and post-event follow-up
  • Contribute to ad hoc tasks and initiatives to support senior bankers and BD team
