About The Position

A vacancy exists for a mid day special education bus aide for the Transportation Department. The Driver and the Aide will pick up a student from home and drop off at Tuscarora Elementary at 12:20 pm. This run will be Monday - Friday. Must use a special needs bus. The driver must meet/pick up bus aide first and will drop aide off upon completion of run. This run is subject to change or extend as needed for student needs. The position also involves assisting teachers in the classroom with daily instructional and non-instructional activities. This includes communicating, collaborating, and cooperating with colleagues, supervisors, and students, assisting the teacher in routine classroom operation, and demonstrating understanding of student's disability while maintaining a firm, courteous, and fair demeanor. The role requires initiative and creativity with students and their program, maintaining the classroom, preparing bulletin boards, attending Open house and conferences on a voluntary or as requested basis, keeping records, writing lessons on the board, and correcting student's work. Additionally, the aide will load/unload wheelchair-bound students on the bus, wait with students for transportation, manage and instruct small groups of students when the teacher is not available, instruct and demonstrate the use of exercise equipment and production machinery, and participate in physical activities that are part of the students' basic program. The role also includes assisting students with lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing clothes of special needs students, assisting and supervising special needs students in a classroom setting, modifying materials and instructional activities as per IEP and teacher requests for special needs students, and performing care procedures for students with disabilities, including suctioning, nasogastric insert feeding, and catheterization as needed. Flexibility in schedule and activities throughout the day is essential, as is helping with duplicating and collecting educational paperwork and completing necessary training and in-service as required by the County.

Requirements

All qualifications as set forth in the “West Virginia School Transportation Regulations”
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
State mandated competency exam.
Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detail but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students.
Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Understanding of confidentiality and commitment to abide by confidentiality regulations.
