About The Position

A vacancy exists for a mid day bus aide for the Transportation Department. The Driver and the Aide will pick up a student from North Middle and taken home at 11:15 am. This run will be Monday - Friday. Must use a special needs bus. The driver must meet/pick up bus aide first and will drop aide off upon completion of run. This run is subject to change or extend as needed for student needs. This role also involves assisting teachers in the classroom with daily instructional and non-instructional activities, managing and instructing small groups of students, and performing care procedures for students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • State mandated competency exam.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students and administrators.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detail but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work with emotionally, physically and/or mentally impaired students.
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and commitment to abide by confidentiality regulations.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as adaptive equipment and supplies.
  • Frequently push/pull up to 100 pounds such as student wheelchairs.
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to sit, to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to bend at the trunk more than the average person.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment.
  • Must be physically able to work with students that elope.

Responsibilities

  • Loads/unloads wheelchair bound students on bus, and/or waits with students for transportation.
  • Manages and instructs small groups of students when the teacher is not available.
  • Instructs and demonstrates use of exercise equipment and production machinery.
  • Participates in physical activities, which are a part of the students' basic program.
  • Assists students in lifting, feeding, toileting, and changing clothes of special needs students.
  • Assist and supervise special needs students in a classroom setting.
  • Modify materials and instructional activities as per IEP and teacher requests for special needs students.
  • Perform care procedures for students with disabilities, including suctioning, nasogastric insert feeding, catheterization as needed.
  • Be flexible in schedule and activities throughout the day.
  • Help or assist with duplicating and collecting educational paperwork.
  • Complete necessary training and in-service as required by the County.
  • Supervises students.
  • Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
  • Assists teacher in routine classroom operation.
  • Demonstrates understanding of student's disability; keeps firm hand and is courteous and fair.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity with students and their program.
  • Maintains classroom including preparing bulletin boards.
  • Attends Open house, conferences on a voluntary or as requested basis.
  • Keeps records, writes lessons on the board, and corrects student's work.
