About The Position

This U.S. based, full-time position is for a Microgrid Project Application Engineer located in Houston, TX. The role involves developing detailed functional specifications, HMI specifications, communication architectures, and I/O lists for microgrid projects. The engineer will configure systems using various standard, communication, and network protocols, integrate intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), and design/review schematics for protection and control panels. Responsibilities also include programming automation devices, configuring protection settings, leading factory acceptance tests and commissioning, and conducting training sessions. The focus is on Automation System technologies, specifically Power Management Systems, and preparing/executing factory and site acceptance tests.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 3 years with a master’s degree.
  • Experience in designing Battery Energy Storage Systems and validating low-voltage switchboard designs and breaker selections.
  • Proficiency in creating network communication diagrams for PV systems, BESS systems, generator control systems and Schneider Electric SCADA systems.
  • Skilled in configuring PLCs using PLC tools.
  • Conducting site audits of electrical and generator control systems.
  • Collaborating with inverter-based power sources like solar and battery energy storage inverters.
  • Developing I/O lists for electrical and control systems, incorporating PLCs, protection systems, and switchgears.
  • Implementing power protection and control projects across sectors such as Oil & Gas, utilities, electro-intensive industries, or renewable energy.
  • Proficiency with standard, communication, and network protocols, including IEC61850, DNP 3.0, Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 104, IEC101, PRP, HSR, and RSTP.
  • Experience with power monitoring & control equipment from key industry players like Schneider, Alstom, SEL, GE, ABB, and Siemens.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment, maintaining quality and adhering to budget constraints.
  • Excellent written and spoken English proficiency.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% domestically.

Responsibilities

  • Developing detailed functional specifications, HMI specifications, communication architectures, and I/O lists (both hardware and software) for microgrid projects.
  • Developing the system configuration using standard, communication protocol, and network protocols, including IEC61850, DNP 3.0, Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 104, IEC101, PRP, HSR, and RSTP.
  • Integrating intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) within automation architectures and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into power system schemes, ensuring seamless communication and electrical connections.
  • Designing and reviewing schematics for protection and control panels, as well as configuring protection relays, IEDs, PLCs, HMIs, and other intelligent electronic devices.
  • Programming automation devices, including protection relays and PLCs, and configuring protection settings based on Short Circuit and Arc Flash studies.
  • Leading factory acceptance tests and commissioning processes.
  • Planning and conducting comprehensive training sessions and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Acceptance Testing, Lead the preparation and execution of factory and site acceptance tests to validate system performance.
