Microgrid Field Engineer

Solaris Energy Infrastructure•Houston, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

At Solaris, you'll design, build, commission, and maintain the power generation, transmission, and distribution systems behind mission-critical data center power for hyperscale and AI infrastructure customers. As a Microgrid Field Engineer, you'll travel to customer sites nationwide to troubleshoot complex electrical systems, commission new equipment, and serve as the face of our team on-site. We're looking for a self-starter with a total ownership mentality — someone early in their career who wants to learn fast and dig into hard technical problems. This is a travel-intensive, field-based role: you should be based in the continental U.S., within about a two-hour drive of a major airport, and ready to travel extensively to support projects nationwide.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another engineering discipline is desired; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 0-2 years of experience in power systems design, analysis, testing, and/or field service, with a focus on high-power, high-voltage systems.
  • Recent graduates with relevant internship or co-op experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (75%+) to customer sites across the continental U.S., often on short notice.
  • Must reside in the continental U.S., within approximately a two-hour drive of a major airport.
  • Exceptional communicator – direct and transparent, skilled problem-solver with proven success in building coalitions and avoiding conflicts
  • Total ownership mentality – proactively identifies and removes obstacles across numerous ongoing tasks
  • Independent thinker – provides original thoughts and constantly asking "how can we do this better"
  • Innovative thinker – willingness to consider novel solutions and ability to adapt to change
  • Desirable teammate – impeccable character, humility, and collaborative
  • Relentless – aspires to contribute and achieve his/her full potential

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with switchgear, protective relays, or gas turbines (Solar Turbines, GE, Pratt & Whitney) is a huge plus.
  • Experience with transformer or switchgear testing, maintenance, or commissioning.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a similar field or design role, including E-house/switchgear FAT.
  • Professional Engineering license or intention to actively pursue PE license.
  • Experience with power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerWorld, Matlab, PSCAD, PSS/E, Simulink, etc.) and performing load flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, coordination, and transient stability studies.
  • Familiarity with industrial power systems up to 345 kV — switchgear, transformers, BESS, VFDs, motors, UPS/emergency backups, and protective devices — plus PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley) and communications protocols like Modbus, DNP3, and IEEE C37.115/C37.111.
  • Experience with CAD software: Revit, AutoCAD, NX, etc.
  • Naturally curious self-starter with a total ownership mentality — eager to dive into unfamiliar systems, take initiative, and drive problems to resolution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the professionalism and confidence to represent the company directly with customers on-site.
  • Proven ability to work independently, stay organized under pressure, and thrive in dynamic, high-stress environments with tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites nationwide to commission, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical power systems and microgrids — including installing and testing relays and protection settings — often working independently under tight timelines.
  • Serve as an on-site technical point of contact for customers and operations teams, diagnosing and resolving complex electrical issues with sharp attention to detail.
  • Develop, program, test, and troubleshoot protective relay settings and schemes for high-voltage equipment, including relays from SEL, GE, Siemens, and Beckwith.
  • Support factory testing (FAT) of purchased and manufactured equipment, including E-houses, switchgear, and gas turbine packages from OEMs such as Solar Turbines, GE, and Pratt & Whitney.
  • Champion a safety-first, quality-first mindset on every site visit, ensuring compliance with NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, NESC, and IEEE standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to drive rapid, continuous improvements and support infrastructure upgrades across project sites.
  • Create and maintain power budgets, monitoring, and metering for mission-critical assets to optimize visibility and efficiency.
  • Perform detailed design and review of electrical power systems: one-lines, three-lines, control/relaying schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, conduit/cable sizing/routing, grounding design, general arrangement, etc.
  • Participate in design meetings and reviews for new microgrid and power delivery projects, and support vendor qualification and quality checks on purchased equipment.
  • Maintain organized design and asset documentation across all project sites.
