About The Position

The Microbiology Lab Technician I performs routine microbiological testing and quality control analysis. Under direct supervision, this role supports daily laboratory operations, ensures accurate data collection, and helps maintain compliance with food safety standards including GMP, HACCP, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent work experience considered.
  • 0–2 years of laboratory experience; internship or co-op experience in a food/beverage or QC lab is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of aseptic technique and microbiological testing methods.
  • Familiarity with food safety programs (HACCP, GMP, SQF, or similar) is desirable.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data recording and sample handling.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) precisely.
  • Basic math skills for dilutions, calculations, and result interpretation.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple samples simultaneously.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and willingness to learn LIMS software.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or co-op experience in a food/beverage or QC lab is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine microbiological tests including Aerobic Plate Count (APC/Standard Plate Count), yeast and mold, coliform, and E. coli analysis.
  • Prepare culture media, reagents, and laboratory supplies following established protocols.
  • Collect, label, and log environmental and product samples in accordance with sampling schedules.
  • Operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, pH meters, etc.
  • Record test results accurately in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and AS400 or logbooks.
  • Perform routine cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of the laboratory workspace and equipment.
  • Follow all Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and safety protocols.
  • Assist senior technicians and supervisors with special projects and method validations as needed.
  • Promptly report out-of-specification (OOS) results and non-conformances to the appropriate personnel.
