The Lake Superior Research Institute (LSRI) is seeking a microbiology laboratory student research assistant. No prior experience necessary! The following position is available starting Spring 2026, with the potential for employment continuing during the summer and next academic year. Some field work opportunities may be available during the summer. The position requires 10 hours per week and is flexible to allow for working around class schedules. Students with work study funding are encouraged to apply. Students who work for LSRI have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom to real-world research problems, including ballast water research, bacteriological testing of well water samples, and monitoring bacterial levels at local beaches. Students will work alongside professional scientists and have opportunities to network with other agency professionals with whom LSRI collaboratively works. Working for LSRI helps students build their resume, and staff members are happy to provide letters of recommendation for students applying for jobs or graduate school. Students who have worked for LSRI have gone on to graduate school to study chemistry and biology, and several have become dentists, medical doctors, or scientists at federal agencies. Many of LSRI’s current staff began their careers by first working here as students! LSRI is a great place to develop the skills that will allow you to make a meaningful impact on the world around you.
