About The Position

E.A. Sween is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Microbiology Lab Technician. The Microbiology Lab Technician will support the Food Safety and Quality microbiology department, specifically environmental monitoring, processing swabs, raw material quality testing, shelf-life studies and associated documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in food science or related field is preferred
  • Must be able to lift waist high and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work in a cold environment (55 degrees to -10 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • Able to stand on feet for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to communicate orally and in writing using English
  • Attention to detail and strong understanding of quality control procedures
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Basic math and computer skills (Microsoft word and excel)
  • Experience with verification and validation requirements for SQF or BRC certification
  • Ability to operate an iPad
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Must have the ability to effectively speak and teach in front of groups of people.
  • Maintain and extend a positive attitude to work environment and be able to accept/withstand negative feedback from others
  • Cross-cultural competence; effective and respectful interactions with people from any culture or place of origin

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Environmental Monitoring of the Production Areas.
  • Perform microbiological analyses of Environmental Swabs, Finished Products, and other materials as required.
  • Process microbiological samples daily as needed.
  • Provide guidance to Quality Control on risks to Food Safety, and potential corrective actions
  • Conduct microbiological testing on finished products to assure ongoing product safety and quality.
  • Cooperate with all aspects of the safety program at E. A. Sween Company
  • Ensure chemicals are at the appropriate strength.
  • Conduct titrations daily and weekly according to schedules.
  • Communicate issues to the Sanitation Manager and take corrective actions.
  • Perform Calibration verifications on thermometers (IRs/probes) daily before production start-up.
  • Document non-compliances and corrective actions, and communicate results
  • Provide support to the Sanitation Team as needed
  • Make media for the Microbiology Lab.
  • Conduct microbial testing using Petri film and selective enrichments.
  • Execute testing using the 3M MDS Assay System.
  • Assist with Environmental Monitoring as needed
  • Become HACCP Certified within a year of hire
  • Professionally represent Deli Express to our suppliers, industry and government including FDA, USDA, MDA, Military and SQF
