About The Position

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, the Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and daily supervision of work activities of personnel. This role involves providing daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees, and planning, organizing, delineating, and scheduling the duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers. The supervisor will also assist other technologists with technical problems and interpretation of results, determine the priority of work to ensure timely completion, and manage the ordering and maintenance of laboratory supplies. Maintaining Standard Operating Procedures manuals, required records, and reports, and ensuring staff adherence to all safety policies and procedures are key responsibilities. Furthermore, the supervisor is responsible for ensuring staff follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance, as well as proficiency testing, quality control, and corrective action policies. The ability to identify and address problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting is crucial.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology required or Bachelor's Degree Laboratory Sciences required and Other Certificate/Diploma Clinical Laboratory Sciences required
  • Medical Technologist (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required
  • lab experience 3-5 years required
  • The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.
  • Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgment.
  • Must have a relatively high level of analytical ability to work with complex instrumentation, resolve technical equipment problems, relate test results to normal and pathological states, and interpret quality control data.
  • Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair, and analytic techniques.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations.
  • Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees.
  • Plans, organizes, delineates, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers.

  • Responsible for ensuring staff adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for orientation, training, and competency assessments, assuring staff follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Ensures staff maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Ensures staff adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Ensures staff follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Ensures staff are capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
  • Ensures documentation of all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists.
  • Pay careful attention to detail and adhere to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified.
  • Perform as a team member.
  • Interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff, including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
