State of Washington•King County - Shoreline, WA

About The Position

The Washington State Department of Health Public Health Laboratories is hiring a Microbiologist at the Microbiologist 1 or Microbiologist 2 level, depending on qualifications. The role is full-time and onsite at the Public Health Laboratory in Shoreline, Washington. The recruitment covers one seven-month temporary, non-permanent position and one permanent position. The Microbiologist will join the Emergency Response Laboratory (LRN-B/BioWatch), which conducts surveillance and diagnostic testing for high-consequence pathogens, including year-round environmental testing to detect intentional releases of biological threat agents. The role also supports emergency response testing in coordination with first responders, law enforcement, epidemiologists, and local health departments, including suspicious-package and white-powder analysis. The position prepares and processes environmental and clinical specimens; performs culture-based, molecular, and other methods to detect pathogens and toxins; supports laboratory quality assurance, equipment maintenance, training, and data management; and contributes to surge work and special projects. Work directly supports biological-threat detection, outbreak response, and public health partners across Washington. The position requires work in Biosafety Level 2 and Level 3 laboratory spaces, handling infectious specimens while wearing required personal protective equipment. Staff must complete an occupational health assessment for BSL-3 work and respirator use, receive DOH-provided evaluation and training, and undergo vaccinations required by the laboratory risk assessment. Schedules include weekend and rotating holiday work, standby duty, and the possibility of working outside core hours on short notice for outbreaks or emergency response. The role may occasionally require in- and out-of-state travel for training meetings and conferences. It is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
