About The Position

US Cannalytics is seeking a Microbiologist for a challenging position in an independent, state-licensed testing laboratory serving the Michigan cannabis market. The successful candidate will be reliable, exhibit strong attention to detail, and thrive in a fast-paced, production-driven laboratory environment. This role is responsible for executing state-mandated microbiological testing while maintaining strict compliance with SOPs, ISO requirements, and state regulations. The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience organizing and performing high-volume, multi-assay microbiological workflows to meet laboratory production demands. This includes preparation of test samples and quality controls for molecular and culture-based methods, supporting environmental monitoring activities, maintaining inventory and documentation, and working collaboratively to meet established turnaround times and quality standards. This position is also responsible for daily laboratory maintenance, compliant documentation, and providing technical expertise to laboratory personnel. Experience in an environmental, public health, food science, or other regulated laboratory environment is preferred. This is a full-time, in-lab position based in Warren, MI.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural science (biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, or related field)
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • At least 1 year of professional experience with culture-based microbiology methods
  • At least 1 year of professional experience with molecular genetic techniques (qPCR/PCR)
  • Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both scientific and non-scientific staff
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an environmental, public health, food science, or other regulated laboratory environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for cannabis sample tracking and destruction
  • Responsible for accurate measurement and documentation of product weights
  • Prepare samples for microbiological assays and testing using aseptic technique
  • Execute microbiological testing according to SOPs and state testing requirements
  • Analyze data from testing and submit to the Laboratory Director or designee
  • Review, document, and approve microbiological testing results and quality controls in the laboratory information management system (LIMS)
  • Perform area and instrument cleaning, maintenance, and calibration, including compliant documentation of associated logs
  • Ensure all SOPs, state regulations, and safety requirements are followed when handling potentially infectious material and biohazardous waste
  • Assist in developing methods to quantitate and identify microorganisms in cannabis products
  • Perform or assist in instrument qualification and validations
  • Perform proficiency testing, including documentation and submission
  • Develop and maintain microbial cultures for study
  • Provide recommendations to improve microbial assay workflow and turnaround time
  • Maintain current technical knowledge and support microbiology-related questions from laboratory personnel
  • Perform all other duties as assigned, which may include cannabis sampling
  • Follow company SOPs, all rules, regulations, and laws for the transportation of items for medical marijuana testing
  • Works in a timely manner, strives to improve quality and maintain accuracy.
