About The Position

This position performs analytical testing in the biology section to produce high-quality, legally defensible data that supports laboratory certifications and accreditations. This role operates in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities, requiring strong organizational skills and self-management. Daily activities may include sample preparation, quality checks, analytical testing, peer review, proficiency testing, foodborne illness investigations, SOP and document updates, training, decontamination, mouse husbandry, cleaning, media preparation, data entry and review, and participation in internal and external audits. The position also performs regulatory testing on food, dairy, shellfish, seafood, water, and other samples to ensure the health and safety of consumers in Alaska and worldwide. This work directly supports public health, commercial industries, and environmental protection through accurate and timely laboratory results. The Environmental Health Laboratory (EHL) supports the Department of Environmental Conservation’s mission by providing analytical and technical information for environmental health programs that monitor air, food, seafood, soil, water, and zoonotic diseases. This position advances that work by performing chemical and microbiological testing that produces accurate, legally defensible data essential for safe food, clean drinking water, and strong public health protections statewide.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college in microbiology, medical technology, a laboratory science, a biological science, or chemistry, or a closely related field.

Responsibilities

  • Performs analytical testing in the biology section.

  • Performs a terminal bioassay on live mice.
  • Participates in weekend/holiday rotation for mouse care.
