About The Position

The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco is seeking adjunct instructors to teach specific courses for the fall semester. Students in the MFT Program graduate with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. Graduates are eligible to gain hours for licensure through the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for the MFT and have the option of gaining eligibility for the License in Professional Clinical Counseling. The program's mission is to prepare students to be socially and culturally responsive relationship and family therapists and mental health counselors, upholding values of equity, social justice, community and cultural wealth, and collaborative problem solving. The program is committed to embracing diversity, academic excellence, and compassionate service to children, adults, and families.

Requirements

Master’s Degree in School Counseling or MFT, Ph.D./Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology required.
Demonstrate expertise and knowledge in the specific content area of the course.

Responsibilities

Teach courses such as CPSY 631 – Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy, CPSY 634 – Ethical, Legal and Professional Issues, CPSY 677 – Counseling Across Cultures, CPSY 647 – Group Work in Clinical Settings, CPSY 687 – Family Systems Therapy, CPSY 690 – Research Methods, and CPSY 637 – Traineeship I.
Integrate issues of diversity, equity, and advocacy in teaching.
Provide an overview of basic concepts, history, process, mechanisms of change, and applications of major schools of counseling and psychotherapy.
Examine major schools of thought or theory through a multicultural lens, evaluating their culture-bound factors and applicability to diverse populations.
Examine current trends and pressing questions in the practice of counseling, with attention to interviewing skills.
Feature the roles and responsibilities of Marriage and Family Therapists according to laws and ethical principles governing practice.
Emphasize ethics codes of major professional associations, family law and statutes covering mental health practice for MFTs in California, and legal mandates pertaining to children in schools.
Develop cultural sensitivity to one’s own cultural value system and the value and attitudes of diverse groups in cross-cultural counseling settings.
Increase awareness of the effects that culture, race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation have on human development and the counseling process.
Learn effective counseling strategies and generic counseling methods that accommodate a diversity of cultures.
Provide an overview of the theories and practice of group counseling and consultation, with an emphasis on evidenced-based group therapy models.
Conduct in-class group therapy sessions, participate in or observe mental-health consumer groups, and design a community workshop or therapeutic group.
Explore understanding and application of evidence-based family systems models.
Integrate and demonstrate skills and techniques from various family systems models.
Explore the impact of major family system disruptions such as chronic mental illness, chemical dependence, dual diagnosis, trauma, and loss.
Introduce the process, methods, and research literature pertaining to counseling individuals and families.
Apply basic research concepts through literature critique, literature review, and mini-proposal development.
Learn to become professional consumers of research regarding the relationship between research and treatment.
Focus upon and emphasize evidence-based treatment and outcome research.
Provide supervised experience in marriage and family therapy in an institutional setting under professional supervision.
Focus on case conceptualization of fieldwork experiences and development of clinical skills, specifically assessment, treatment planning and intervention strategies.
Address case management and client-centered advocacy strategies, such as accessing community resources.
