Depending upon job assignment and primary skill, the technician completes precise calibration, modification, and troubleshoots to ensure the accuracy of complex mechanical, physical, electronic, and health physics measuring instruments. These instruments are used to inspect and test weapons, weapons systems, and non-weapons systems within metrology parameters which include all basic measurement units such as length, mass, time, current, temperature, force, radiological exposure, decay rates and all derived units thereof. The technician works with precision artifacts and standards in the performance of these functions. Typical functions of this classification are as follows: Maintains, tests, and cross-checks Pantex Metrology Laboratory primary reference standards for the basic units in the mechanical, physical, electronic and health physics measurement parameters. Participates in the performance of measurement audit packages and blind audits as prescribed by, and in close association with, the Accredited Labs (AL) Primary Standards Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and other AL Contractor Standards Laboratories in determining the competence of the Pantex Metrology Laboratory technical staff. Maintains, tests, calibrates, and certifies Pantex Metrology Laboratory working standards for use in the calibration and certification of test equipment. Maintains, tests, and certifies measuring and test equipment for use in weapons - related and general operations activities at the Plant. Initiates technical reports utilizing existing procedures, schematics, documents, and specifications to provide technical data to engineering staff for measurement system studies as requested. Performs mathematical calculations and technical evaluations. Assists in establishing new metrology procedures and techniques with a high degree of accuracy. Applies statistical quality control concepts and techniques by preparing statistical charts. Supports automated calibrations and test systems and measurement assurance programs. Performs tasks according to Standards, Internal Operating Procedures, Operation and Instruction Standards, and other written procedures or verbal instructions. Follows prescribed safety and security procedures. Maintains equipment and records as directed by good laboratory practices. Interprets drawings and procedures. Required to stay abreast of metrology aspects by learning new instructions, procedures, and equipment operations.
